Named after the craft

A cordwainer was a leather craftsman — someone who could judge a hide by touch and would not cut a corner to save an hour. We took the name because that is the standard worth holding.

Why this brand exists

Most leather sold online is not what it claims. “Genuine leather” sounds like a guarantee and is in fact one of the lowest grades — split hide, sanded smooth, coated, and cracked within a few years. Buyers find out in year two, long after the return window closed.

Cordwain was built on the opposite bet: say exactly what the leather is, charge what it costs to make properly, and let the jacket prove the point over a decade rather than a week.

What we make

Full-grain leather jackets, bags and everyday goods, at $280 to $400 for a jacket. That price buys the top grade of hide, proper hardware and stitching built for daily wear. Below it, something has been cut — usually the hide. Above it, you are mostly paying for a name.

How it is made

Every piece is cut and stitched by specialist leather workers, then checked — stitching, hardware, lining, finish — before it is packed. Small batches, not warehouses. That is why a style sometimes sells out rather than being restocked instantly.

What we will not do

  • Call split or bonded hide “genuine leather” and hope you do not notice.
  • Run permanent discounts so the real price is never the real price.
  • Write our own reviews, or buy them.
  • Leave you with a customs bill at the door.

Buying from another country

Most of our customers are in the US, UK, Europe and Australia, and the two things that worry them are fit and cost. So duties are paid by us, delivery is to your door, and fit advice is a message away before you order — from a person who will tell you honestly if a different piece suits you better.

Questions, answered

A cordwainer is a leather craftsman, named after the Cordovan leather of Córdoba. It describes what the brand does rather than inventing a word.

Specialist leather workers in small batches, working to our patterns and specifications. Every piece is inspected before dispatch.

Full-grain — the outer layer of the hide with its natural grain intact. It is the strongest grade and the only one that develops a patina instead of cracking.

$280 to $400 is what full-grain hide, proper hardware and real stitching cost when nobody is cutting corners or paying for a famous name.

Rarely, and never permanently. A price that is always discounted was never the real price.
