About Men's Bomber Jackets

A bomber is the easiest leather jacket to own, and that is not a compliment people expect to hear about leather. The ribbed collar, cuffs and hem borrow the shape of a sweatshirt, which is why it goes over a hoodie, under a coat, and with almost anything without asking permission. If a biker jacket feels like a decision, this one does not.

What does the ribbing actually do?

It seals the openings. Knitted cuffs and hem close against the wrist and waist so wind cannot get up the jacket, which is what the shape was designed for in unpressurised aircraft. It also lets the body blouse slightly above the hem — that small amount of bagging is the whole silhouette, and a bomber cut without it just looks like a short jacket.

How should the hem sit?

On your hip bone or an inch above it, never below. The rib should grip lightly without digging in. If the hem has dropped onto the top of your pants, the jacket is too long and the proportion is gone, no matter how well the shoulders fit.

Is it warm enough on its own?

Down to roughly 50°F (10°C) over a shirt, and a fair bit lower over a hoodie, because the sealed openings do more than the lining does. It is not a winter coat. Below freezing you want the puffer, which carries actual insulation.

Bomber or varsity?

Same silhouette, different volume of attention. A varsity puts wool in the body and stripes on the ribbing, which reads as nostalgia and suits a casual wardrobe. An all-leather bomber is quieter and easier to wear somewhere you would not wear a sports jacket.

Questions, answered

Is a bomber good for a first leather jacket?

It is the easiest one to own. Nothing about the shape demands the rest of the outfit adapt to it, which is not true of a biker.

Does the ribbing stretch out?

Good ribbing recovers for years. It goes slack when the knit is thin or synthetic — worth pressing on before buying any bomber, ours included.

Can I fit a hoodie under it?

Yes. The bomber is cut with the most room through the body of anything in the range apart from the hooded jacket.

What size should I take?

Your usual. The shape is forgiving enough that most people get it right, but send us your chest and height and we will confirm rather than guess.

Will I pay customs on arrival?

No. Duties and taxes are paid by us worldwide before the parcel ships.

How do I store it in summer?

On a wide hanger, out of direct sunlight, with air around it. Never in a plastic cover — leather needs to breathe or it grows mildew.

For the same ease with a hood added, see hooded. For something sharper with a shirt, the men's hub lists the café racer cuts.
