About Men's Leather Puffers

This is the only jacket here built for actual cold rather than for looking ready for it. A standard leather jacket blocks wind and does nothing else; the lining is there to help it slide over a sleeve. A puffer carries insulation between quilted panels, which is why it is heavier, warmer, and the one you reach for in January.

How cold can you take it?

Comfortably to around 23°F (−5°C) over a shirt, and below that with a knit underneath. The limit is not the leather, which stops wind completely, but the loft of the fill — and loft is what quilting protects. The stitched channels keep the insulation spread evenly instead of letting it slide to the hem, which is where cheap padded jackets fail after one winter.

Why choose leather over a nylon puffer?

Wind and wear. Nylon needs a coating to stop wind and the coating degrades; leather is windproof by nature and stays that way. Nylon also tears — one catch on a door handle and the fill comes out. Leather scuffs instead, and the scuff becomes patina. The trade is weight: this jacket is roughly twice the weight of a nylon equivalent.

Does it fit like the other jackets?

No, and this catches people out. The quilting adds bulk to the jacket itself, so it wears larger than a biker or racer in the same nominal size. Most people take their normal size and find it right over a shirt and a light knit. If you plan to wear a thick sweater underneath, tell us — that is a size up, not a guess.

How do you clean an insulated leather jacket?

Surface only. Wipe the shell with a barely damp cloth and let it dry away from radiators. Never put it in a machine and never dry-clean it: the solvents strip the hide and flatten the fill in one pass, and neither recovers. Condition the shell once a year, in fall.

Questions, answered

Is a leather puffer genuinely warm or just heavy?

Genuinely warm. The shell stops wind entirely, which is what most cold actually is, and the quilted fill holds air against you. It is warmer than any uninsulated leather jacket by a wide margin.

Can I wear a sweater underneath?

Yes, but size for it. Tell us what you plan to layer and we will pick the size before you order rather than after.

Does snow damage it?

No. Brush it off and let it dry naturally. What damages leather is drying it fast against a heat source, which stiffens and cracks the grain.

Is it too warm for fall?

For most people, yes. Below about 50°F (10°C) it comes into its own; above that the hooded or bomber is the more comfortable choice.

Are duties included?

Yes. Duty and import tax are settled before the parcel leaves us, to every country we ship to.

If you want winter warmth without the quilted look, the hooded jacket is the lighter alternative. For everything else in the men's range, start at the main jackets page.
