A vest covers the weeks a jacket cannot. Spring and fall are too warm for sleeves and too cold for a shirt on its own, and that gap is longer than most wardrobes account for. It is also the cheapest way into full-grain leather — the same hide and construction as the jackets, without the sleeves.
How close should a leather vest fit?
Closer than a jacket, because there are no sleeves to balance the volume. The shoulder seam sits on the bone, the armholes clear your arm without gaping, and it closes over a t-shirt with room to breathe. A vest cut loose looks like a jacket that lost an argument.
What goes underneath it?
A plain tee is the simplest and hardest to get wrong. A hoodie underneath, with the hood breaking over the collar, makes it casual and warm at once. A button-down reads sharper than people expect. The vest takes its character entirely from the layer beneath it, which is why it earns its shelf space.
When would you choose this over a jacket?
When you need warmth at the core and freedom at the arms — driving, working, anything where a sleeve gets in the way — or when the temperature is genuinely between seasons. It also layers under a winter coat, which a leather jacket almost never does without bulk at the shoulder.
Is a cheaper vest a false economy?
More so than with a jacket, oddly. Vests are where split hide and bonded leather appear most often, because the lower price hides the cheaper material. The tell is the edge: full-grain shows a fibrous, slightly irregular cut edge, while bonded shows a uniform layer with a backing behind it.

Questions, answered
Do I size up for a hoodie underneath?
Yes — one size. Over a t-shirt, take your usual. Tell us which way you will wear it and we will confirm before you order.
Is it the same leather as the jackets?
The same full-grain cowhide, cut from the same hides. The only difference is the pattern.
Can I wear it on its own?
Over bare skin it will stick and hold sweat, and that damages the lining over time. A thin layer underneath is better for the vest as well as for you.
Does it work in the rain?
Light rain, yes — wipe it and let it air. It is water-resistant rather than waterproof.
Will I pay import duties?
No. They are paid by us on every order, to every country we ship to.
How often should I condition it?
Two or three times a year. Vests see more direct contact with skin than jackets do, so they dry out slightly faster at the collar.
If you want sleeves at the same grade of hide, the men's jackets hub is the next stop. For small leather goods that age the same way, see accessories.
