Description
What the braid is actually for
At both ends of a leash the strap has to turn back on itself — around the handle loop and around the clip. How that join is made is the whole question. A riveted join puts every pound of load through two punched holes, and a punched hole is a weak point by definition. A braided join weaves the strap back through itself, so the load spreads along several inches of hide instead of concentrating at a metal pin.
Braid, rivet or stitch
| Join | Load path | Fails by |
|---|---|---|
| Braided | Spread across several inches | Gradual loosening you can see |
| Riveted | Concentrated at two holes | Tearing at a hole, suddenly |
| Stitched | Spread along the thread line | Thread abrading, visibly |
Braided and stitched both give you warning. A rivet does not, which is why it is worth knowing which one you are holding.
Natural tan is the one that changes most
Undyed or lightly dyed full-grain starts pale and goes several tones darker in the first year, and faster wherever it is handled. A tan lead a year old has a dark handle and a lighter strap, which is a record of use rather than wear. The cost is that it shows mud and oil the way the darker colours do not.

What this lead is not
Everyday walking equipment, not a restraint or training device for a dog that pulls dangerously.
Questions
Can a braid come undone?
It loosens before it fails, which is the point — you get weeks of warning. Check the weave at the clip end every few months and look for the strands sitting looser than they did.
Will the tan stay this colour?
No, and that is deliberate. Expect it noticeably darker within a few months, darkest at the handle. If you want it to stay as photographed, choose the dark brown.
Is braided stronger than stitched?
Not stronger, but it fails differently. Both spread the load; a braid loosens where stitching abrades. Either is better than a rivet.
How do I clean natural tan?
Let mud dry, then brush it off — wet-wiping mud into light leather drives it in. Dry at room temperature, never near heat.

What I like most about the design is the tan shade. It suits the style of this piece really well. The overall look is easy to picture with everyday outfits.
Sophie Bennett –
This piece has a clean look, and the tan shade is a nice touch. It is the detail I would point out first. It has a more understated appearance than some similar designs.
Lucas Bennett –
The shape of this piece is appealing, especially with the tan shade. It has the kind of look I generally prefer.
Mia Collins –
For me, the strongest part of this piece design is the tan shade. It is simple but distinctive. The product title and details made the design easy to understand.

I was looking at the design details, and the tan shade caught my eye. It works well on this piece. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
