Description
A wallet in a colour most brands do not make
Almost every wallet sold is black or brown, because those are the two nobody returns. Maroon is the third option and it behaves differently from both: against a dark coat it reads almost black, and in daylight it reads unmistakably red.
This maroon leather wallet is cut from full-grain hide. The colour is dyed into the leather rather than sprayed across the surface, which is why it has depth and shifts with the light instead of sitting flat the way a coated finish does.
What is inside
| Leather | Full-grain |
|---|---|
| Format | Bifold, billfold |
| Inner right | ID panel with card slots |
| Inner left | Card slots |
| Note section | Full-width, runs the length of the fold |
| Colour | Maroon |
Why oxblood ages better than brown
Brown leather lightens at the edges as it wears, which is why a worn brown wallet looks tired before it is worn out. An oxblood bifold wallet men carry daily goes the other way: the red deepens toward the corners where it is handled most, so wear reads as patina rather than fading.
Dyed through, not coated
Press a thumbnail into the edge of a coated wallet and a pale line appears underneath. That does not happen here, because a burgundy leather wallet full grain like this takes its colour into the fibre. Scuffs darken rather than revealing a different colour below.
What to expect in the first month
Stiff out of the box, which is normal for full-grain and not a fault. The spine loosens within a few weeks of being opened and closed, and the panels start to hold the shape of what you keep in them. It is at its best around month three.
Looking after it
Almost nothing. Your hands supply enough oil to keep it supple. Condition it once a year if the leather starts to look dry at the fold, and do not overfill the note section, because stretching the spine from inside is what ends a bifold early.
Questions
Is maroon too bold for everyday use?
Less than you would expect. Under indoor light it reads close to black and most people will not register it as red at all. It announces itself in daylight and when it is open, not across a room.
How is this different from the black wallet?
It is a different wallet, not the same one in another colour. The internal layout differs — the ID panel sits on the opposite side — and the proportions are slightly different. Choose by the layout you prefer, not just the colour.
Will the colour transfer onto a light pocket?
Dyed-through full-grain can transfer very slightly when brand new, particularly in strong colours. It stops after the first couple of weeks. Keep it out of a cream pocket in the first few days.
Why does it feel stiff?
Because the grain surface is intact. Coated leather feels soft immediately because the coating is soft; the hide underneath never breaks in. Full-grain starts firm and softens permanently, which is the trade you are making.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days, unused and in original condition.
How long does delivery take and are duties included?
Shipping is free worldwide with no minimum order. Import duties are settled before dispatch wherever the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to your country, so the checkout total is the amount you pay. Where a carrier does not support it to your destination, any duty is charged locally — email info@cordwainleather.com and we will confirm which applies to you.

The maroon color gives this wallet its character. The product design feels considered rather than overly busy. It has a more understated appearance than some similar designs.
