Why a frame instead of a zip
A zip pulls the sides of a bag together and makes the opening smaller than the body. A frame does the opposite. On a framed leather travel bag the opening is the widest part, which means you pack it by laying things in rather than pushing them down, and you unpack it by lifting things out rather than fishing.
The trade-off is weight and rigidity. A framed bag will not squash flat into an overhead locker the way a soft duffle will. If you want something that compresses, the duffle is the better answer.
