Description

The proper asymmetric biker shape in a warm cognac brown. The zip runs off-centre from hip to collarbone, the lapel folds back on one side and buttons down on the other, and the waist is shaped so the jacket closes without a belt. Zip hip pockets, zip cuffs, nothing decorative.

Why the zip is off-centre

Because a centre zip leaves a seam sitting directly over your sternum, and on a jacket cut this close that is a ridge you feel. Moving the zip to one side puts a flat double layer of leather across the chest instead — which is also what lets the lapel fold back without the front gaping.

The colour

A mid cognac: redder than chocolate, deeper than tan. It is one of the few leather colours that goes equally well with cream and with black, and it catches light along the sleeves rather than reading flat.

The leather

Full-grain hide, finished smooth. The grain layer is the densest part of the skin, which is why it creases rather than cracks at the elbows and why the shoulders gain a soft sheen after a year of wear.

How it is cut

Cropped at the hip and shaped through the waist by curved side seams. Sized over a t-shirt or a fine knit. The shoulder is the measurement to get right — snug chest will give, a wide shoulder never will.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year, store on a wide hanger, keep it out of long direct sun. Cognac is a dyed colour and ultraviolet light flattens it faster than it does black.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about biker jackets

What is the difference between a biker jacket and a moto jacket?

In practice they are the same garment under two names. “Biker” is the older term and points at the original Perfecto shape — off-centre zip, wide folding lapels, cropped hem. “Moto” is how the fashion trade labels the same silhouette, often in a lighter weight of leather than anything intended for an actual motorcycle.

Why do biker jackets have an off-centre zip?

So the front overlaps. A diagonal zip means one side of the jacket crosses over the other, giving a double thickness of leather across the chest and no hard seam down the middle. It is the same reason the collar can fold flat on one side and still close high on the other.

Are biker jackets still in style?

The asymmetric shape has been in continuous production since the 1920s and has never fully left, which is the strongest answer available. What moves is the detail around it — how cropped, how much hardware, how slim the sleeve. A plain version in a neutral brown sits outside most of that.

How do you break in a new leather jacket?

Wear it, and nothing else. Leather moulds to the person inside it from body heat and movement, so a week of ordinary use does more than any treatment. Do not try to speed it up with heat, water or heavy conditioning — all three dry or stretch the hide in ways that do not reverse.

Can you wear a leather biker jacket to work?

A brown one, in plain leather with minimal hardware, reads far closer to a blazer than a black studded version does. Over a shirt or a fine knit with tailored trousers it passes in most places a leather jacket passes at all. It is the shine and the hardware that make a jacket look out of place, not the cut.

What size should I buy if I’m between two sizes?

Take the larger, then let the shoulders decide. The body of a leather jacket gives about half a size with wear, so the smaller size is tempting but usually ends up too tight once you want a jumper under it. The one thing that makes the larger size wrong is a shoulder seam sitting out on your arm.
