Description

The one that shows its age on purpose

Black leather hides everything that happens to it. Tan does the opposite. Over the first year this wallet darkens along the spine, deepens at the corners where it meets a pocket, and takes a sheen across the face where your thumb opens it. If you want a wallet that looks the same in year three as it did on day one, buy the black one.

This tan leather bifold wallet is cut from full-grain hide, the outer layer with the grain surface intact. That surface is what records wear as colour rather than damage, and it is the only grade that does it.

Why the card slots stack along the edge

Slots cut into the face of a panel add a layer of leather across the whole width. Stacking them along the top edge instead means only the upper third doubles in thickness, so the wallet stays flat where it sits in the pocket. It is the difference between a bifold that lies down and one that wedges.

What a patina actually is

Not dirt, and not damage. Full-grain absorbs oil from your hands and light from wherever you keep it, and those two things darken the surface unevenly — faster where you touch it, slower where you do not. A leather wallet that develops a patina ends up with a pattern of wear that is specific to how you carry it. Coated leather cannot do this, because the coating is a barrier.

Tan is the least forgiving colour

Worth saying plainly. A cognac leather wallet men buy for the patina will also pick up ink marks, water spots and the imprint of whatever sat against it in the first few weeks, while the leather is still light. Those marks become part of the patina rather than disappearing. That is either the appeal or the problem.

Looking after it

Leather this thin flexes constantly, so conditioning matters more here than it does on a jacket. Two or three times a year is enough. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun, which lightens tan unevenly in a way that does not read as wear.

Questions

How long before it starts to patina?

You will see the spine darken within a few weeks. The face takes a few months. It is most noticeable around the one-year mark, by which point the corners will be visibly deeper than the centre.

Can I speed up the patina?

You can, but do not. The techniques that force it — sunlight, oils, water — darken unevenly and permanently, and you lose the pattern that comes from your own use. Carrying it is the method.

Will it stain?

Light tan leather is absorbent while it is new. Ink and oil will mark it and those marks will stay. After the first few months the surface has enough of its own oil to resist most of it.

How is this different from the black and maroon wallets?

They are three different wallets, not one wallet in three colours. The internal layouts differ. This one stacks its card slots along the top edge; the black has a clear ID window; the maroon has its ID panel on the opposite side.

Can I return it?

Yes, within 30 days, unused and in original condition.

How long does delivery take and are duties included?

Shipping is free worldwide with no minimum order. Import duties are settled before dispatch wherever the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to your country, so the checkout total is the amount you pay. Where a carrier does not support it to your destination, any duty is charged locally — email info@cordwainleather.com and we will confirm which applies to you.
