Taller than it is wide, which is unusual and deliberate
Almost every tote is cut wider than it is tall. This one is the other way round. A narrow upright bag sits flat against your side as you walk rather than swinging out, and it takes a laptop, a folder or a water bottle standing up instead of lying across the bottom.
A tall leather tote bag holds the same volume in a shape that is easier to carry and harder to overfill, because there is nowhere for things to spread sideways.

Raw edges are a choice, not an omission
The cut edges of the leather are left as they came off the knife rather than being folded, painted or bound. On a raw edge leather shoulder bag you can see the full thickness of the hide at every edge, which means you can see exactly what you bought. Painted edges look neater on day one and are where cheap bags hide a thin or layered hide.
The trade is honest: raw edges darken and fuzz slightly with wear. Some people want that and some do not.
Two rivets per tab, not one
Every handle tab carries two rivets set vertically. One rivet lets a tab pivot and work itself loose over years of swinging; two hold the angle fixed. It is a small amount of extra hardware in the one place a bag is most likely to fail.
Unlined, so the hide is the structure
No fabric inside. The bag holds its shape because the leather is thick enough to, not because there is a stiffener glued behind a lining. A narrow leather tote women carry daily will soften into its own shape within a few months, and because there is no lining, it softens evenly.

How can you tell if leather is real?
Look at a cut edge. Real leather shows a fibrous, slightly irregular cross-section through its full thickness. Bonded or coated material shows a flat layer sitting on a backing, sometimes with a visible join line. Raw-edge construction makes this checkable on sight, which is part of why we build this way. Smell and the irregularity of the grain are the other two tells.
Why do some leather bags have unfinished edges?
Because it is the most honest construction and the cheapest to fake badly. Finishing an edge means folding, painting or binding it, all of which conceal what the leather is doing. Left raw, the hide is on display — which only works if the hide is worth displaying.
Are tall narrow tote bags practical?
More than wide ones for commuting, less for shopping. Upright items stand up in them, the bag stays against your body rather than swinging, and it fits between you and a train seat. What it does not do is swallow a large flat object sideways.
Do rivets damage leather?
A correctly set rivet does not — it compresses the leather between two faces and spreads the load across the head. Damage comes from rivets set too tight, which cuts the fibres, or set alone where two are needed, which lets the tab rock.
Will the raw edges fray?
Leather does not fray the way fabric does, because it has no woven threads to come loose. Raw edges soften, darken and round off with handling. That is the expected ageing, not a failure.
