Description

Cut on the A-2 flight pattern rather than the plain knit-collar bomber: a pointed shirt collar, two flap patch pockets on the chest, a straight centre zip, and ribbed cuffs and hem. The brown is worn back along the edges and seams so the panels read darker than the outlines.

What an A-2 is

The A-2 was the United States Army Air Forces flight jacket issued from the 1930s, and almost every detail on it answered a problem. The shirt collar sat flat under a harness. The pockets went on the chest with flaps because a seated pilot could not reach a hip pocket and could not afford things falling out. The rib at the wrist and waist kept cold air from being forced up the sleeves. It has been copied ever since because the shape works.

The finish

Dark brown, burnished lighter at the collar points, pocket edges, cuffs and front placket. It is worn into the hide rather than printed over it, so the contrast sharpens with use instead of rubbing off.

The leather

Full-grain hide with the grain surface intact. On a jacket meant to look used, that matters: the lighter edges only stay convincing if there is a real grain layer being burnished, which is what separates this from a coated hide sprayed to look the same.

How it is cut

Easy through the body with the rib pulling it in at the hip, so it blouses slightly above the hem the way the original did. Take your usual size over a t-shirt or a fine knit. It will take a thin jumper underneath without going up a size.

Looking after it

Condition lightly twice a year and go easy on the burnished edges — too much conditioner there evens out the two-tone finish. Hang on a wide hanger; the ribbed hem sets a crease if it is folded.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about flight jackets

What is an A-2 jacket?

A leather flight jacket with a shirt collar, a front zip, two flapped patch pockets at the chest and knitted cuffs and waistband. It was standard issue to American airmen from 1931, and the civilian versions sold today all descend from that pattern.

What is the difference between an A-2 and an MA-1 bomber?

The A-2 is leather with a turndown shirt collar and chest pockets. The MA-1 came later, in nylon, with a knitted stand collar, slash hand pockets and the orange reversible lining. If a jacket has a folding collar and patch pockets it is in the A-2 family; a ribbed stand collar puts it in the MA-1 one.

Why are flight jacket pockets on the chest?

Because the original wearer was sitting down and strapped in. Hip pockets are unreachable in a cockpit seat and spill their contents when you lean forward, so the pockets moved up and gained flaps. On a civilian jacket it is a styling detail, but it is a detail with a reason behind it.

Can you wear a bomber jacket over a hoodie?

Over a thin one, yes, and the ribbed hem absorbs the extra bulk better than a fitted jacket would. A heavy hooded sweatshirt is a size up, and the giveaway is the shoulders rather than the chest — if the seams start pulling outward, the jacket is too small for that layer.

Do new leather jackets smell?

A real one smells of leather, which is the tanning rather than a fault, and it fades over a few weeks of being worn and aired. A sharp chemical or plastic smell is the opposite signal: that is usually the finish on a coated or synthetic hide, and it does not go away.

How can you tell real leather from fake?

Look at the back and the edges. Real hide has an uneven, fibrous reverse and a cut edge that looks like compressed fibre; synthetic has a woven fabric backing and a clean plastic edge. Real leather also varies in grain from panel to panel, warms to the touch, and creases softly instead of folding like vinyl.
