Description

A plain black bomber with knitted rib at the collar, cuffs and hem and a single centre zip up the front. No outer pockets on the face of the jacket, no hardware beyond the zip pull — the whole design is the shape and the surface.

What the rib does

The three knitted bands are structural, not trim. They hold the hem against your hip, the cuffs against your wrist and the collar against your neck, which is what gives a bomber its slightly blown-out shape through the body while still sealing at every opening. Take the rib away and the same pattern hangs like a shirt.

The leather

Full-grain hide in a soft, light finish — supple enough to fall in vertical folds down the sleeve rather than standing away from the arm, which you can see in the close-up photograph. Soft leather is more comfortable immediately and needs a little more care, because a surface this smooth shows a scuff more plainly than a grained one.

How it is cut

Cropped to the hip bone and easy through the body. Of all the leather jacket shapes this is the most forgiving one to size, because the ribbed hem absorbs a difference the way a fitted waist seam cannot. Take your usual size over a tee or a knit.

What to wear it with

Black leather in a plain bomber cut behaves like a cardigan in terms of what it will go with — jeans, tailored trousers, a dress, a skirt. Because the jacket is cropped, it reads best with a high or mid waist underneath; a long top hanging well below the hem is the one combination that fights the shape.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year. Hang it on a broad hanger rather than folding it — the ribbed hem creases flat and takes a while to come back. Do not store it in a plastic cover; leather needs to breathe more than it needs protection from dust.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather bomber jackets

What exactly makes a jacket a bomber?

Three things: a ribbed collar rather than a lapel or a fold-down collar, ribbed cuffs and hem, and a straight centre zip. The shape came out of flight jackets, where the rib was there to stop cold air getting in at the openings. Everything else about the garment can vary.

Should a bomber jacket be fitted or loose?

Easy through the body, close at the shoulder. The point of the cut is a little volume between chest and hem, gathered in by the rib — a bomber taken in to follow the waist stops being a bomber and starts looking like a shrunken blazer. The shoulder seam, as on any jacket, should still land where your shoulder ends.

Why do bomber jackets have ribbed cuffs and hem?

To seal the openings without a drawcord or a buckle. Knitted rib stretches over your hand and then pulls back, so the sleeve can be wide enough to pull on and still sit tight at the wrist — the same job a zip cuff does on a biker jacket, done with elasticity instead of hardware.

Does soft leather scratch more easily?

It marks more visibly, which is not quite the same thing. A soft, smooth finish has a flat surface, so a scratch catches the light across it; a grained or pebbled hide hides the same mark in the texture. Most light scratches on full-grain leather can be worked back in with a fingertip and a little warmth.

What do you wear with a black leather bomber jacket?

Almost anything, which is why people buy them. The only rule worth keeping is the proportion: because it is cropped, pair it with a high or mid-rise trouser, a skirt, or a dress that ends well below it. A long loose top underneath hanging past the hem flattens the whole silhouette.

How should you store a leather jacket between seasons?

On a wide wooden or padded hanger, in a cupboard with air moving, with a cotton cover at most. Not in plastic, which traps moisture against the hide, and not folded in a box, where the creases set. Condition it once before it goes away and once when it comes out.

This jacket has a clean look, and the ribbed trim is a nice touch. It is the detail I would point out first. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
