Description

A proper blazer cut in leather rather than a jacket with lapels bolted on: notch lapels, a two-button single-breasted front, flap pockets at the hip, and a long body that finishes on the upper thigh. The leather is soft enough that it moves and folds like cloth instead of holding its own shape.

Why the length matters

A short blazer cuts you at the waist and reads like a jacket. This one runs past the hip, which lengthens the line and is why it sits comfortably over both trousers and a dress. It also means the two buttons fall low on the body, leaving a long open V above them — the reason it works over a shirt without looking crowded.

The leather

Full-grain hide in a soft, light finish. For a blazer that is the point: a stiff hide would hold a boxy shape and fight the lapel roll, where a supple one drapes from the shoulder and lets the lapel sit flat against the chest. The trade is that it creases where you bend, which on this garment reads as character rather than damage.

How it is cut

Shaped lightly through the waist, not fitted hard. Sized to be worn over a shirt or a fine knit. The shoulder is structured enough to give a clean line but not padded into a square — take your usual blazer size and judge by where the shoulder seam lands.

What to wear it with

Trousers and a silk or cotton shirt is the sharpest version. Jeans and a plain tee takes it the other way without any effort. What it does not want is anything bulky underneath — the buttons sit low and a thick jumper pushes the lapels apart.

Looking after it

Hang it on a shaped or padded hanger, not a wire one; a blazer carries its weight from the shoulders and a thin hanger will dent them. Condition twice a year, and let creases hang out over a day or two rather than pressing them.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the blazer has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather blazers

What is the difference between a leather blazer and a leather jacket?

Tailoring. A blazer is built like a suit jacket — notch lapels, a button front, shaped shoulder, flap or welt pockets, and usually a longer body. A leather jacket is built like outerwear, with a zip, rib or snap fastenings and a hem at the waist. The same material, two different construction traditions.

Is a leather blazer appropriate for the office?

In most workplaces where a blazer is acceptable, a plain black one in leather is too — it has the same silhouette, the same buttons and the same lapel. What reads out of place is shine and hardware, neither of which this has. In a conservative, suited environment, leather will still be noticed; everywhere else it passes as tailoring.

How should a woman’s blazer fit?

The shoulder seam at the edge of your shoulder, the sleeve ending at the wrist bone, and enough room to button it over a shirt without the lapels pulling apart or a horizontal crease forming across the chest. A blazer that fits is comfortable buttoned; if you can only wear it open, it is a size too small.

Can you wear a leather blazer with jeans?

It is one of the better uses for it. The tailoring stops jeans looking scruffy and the jeans stop the blazer looking formal. Keep the denim dark and plain — a distressed or heavily faded jean undercuts the structure that makes the blazer worth wearing.

Do leather blazers wrinkle?

Soft leather creases at the elbows and across the lap when you sit, yes — that is what makes it drape instead of standing stiff. Those creases settle into the garment and soften rather than deepening into damage. Hanging it up at the end of the day does most of the work; it does not need pressing and should never be ironed.

What length should a women’s blazer be?

Short blazers end at the waist and emphasise it; longline ones like this finish on the upper thigh and lengthen the whole line. The length to avoid is the one that stops exactly at the widest point of the hip, which is the only place a blazer hem is genuinely unflattering on most people.
