Description

A black bomber with motorcycle detailing: diamond-quilted panels across each shoulder, a low band collar with a snap tab, two zip chest pockets and two more at the hip. Ribbed cuffs and hem hold it in, and the body is cut closer than a plain bomber.

The quilted shoulders

Those diamond panels came from racing jackets, where the shoulder is both the part that takes the impact and the part that creases most when you lean forward. Quilting a second layer of leather there adds thickness without stiffening the whole jacket. On a jacket worn off a bike it does something simpler — it breaks up the black and gives the shoulder line a defined edge.

The leather

Full-grain hide, black, finished smooth. The quilted panels catch light differently from the flat ones, which is why the shoulders read slightly lighter in photographs than the body does. That contrast stays as the jacket ages.

How it is cut

Shorter and closer than a classic bomber — the rib sits right at the hip and the waist is shaped rather than blousing. Sized over a t-shirt or a thin knit; the quilted shoulder panels have no give, so a thick jumper underneath wants the next size.

What to wear it with

It has more detail than a plain bomber, so keep what is underneath simple — a plain tee, a fine knit, a shirt. Jeans or black trousers. The quilting and four zips are enough happening on their own.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year, working lightly over the quilted panels rather than pressing product into the stitch lines. Wide hanger. Keep the zips running by pulling them fully open before taking the jacket off, rather than wrestling it over your head half-done.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather jacket details

Why do leather jackets have quilted shoulders?

It started as protection. On a motorcycle the shoulder is the first thing to hit the road, so an extra quilted layer went there. The quilting also lets the panel flex without creasing across the middle, which is why it survived onto jackets that never go near a bike — it is the detail that keeps a shoulder looking sharp after a year of wear.

Do leather jackets have inside pockets?

Most lined ones do, usually a single welt pocket on the left chest inside the lining. It is the pocket worth using for a phone, because it keeps the weight against your body instead of swinging in an outer pocket and stretching the leather around the opening over time.

Why does my leather jacket squeak?

Two panels of dry leather rubbing, usually at the underarm or where a sleeve meets the body. It is a sign the hide needs conditioning rather than a fault in the jacket — a light conditioner worked into the seam area stops it. A squeak that comes from the zip rather than the leather is fixed with a graphite pencil along the teeth.

Why does a new leather jacket feel stiff?

Because the fibres have not yet been flexed into the shape of a person. Leather softens from body heat and movement, not from treatments, so the fix is wearing it — a week or two of ordinary use makes a noticeable difference, and a season makes it feel like yours. Thicker hides take longer.

Can leather jackets be dry cleaned?

Only by a cleaner who specialises in leather, and only when there is a real reason. The solvents used on cloth strip oils out of the hide and can lift the dye, and the damage is not reversible. For almost everything — dust, light marks, a wet day — a dry cloth and conditioning do more than cleaning does.

What season is a leather bomber best for?

Spring and autumn, which is most of the year in a temperate climate. Leather is windproof but not insulating, so unlined or lightly lined it is ideal between about 8 and 18 degrees. Below that it needs a real knit underneath or a padded jacket instead.
