Description

A warm chestnut tan jacket with a pointed shirt collar, a straight centre zip and two slash hand pockets set into the front seams. Shaped by long vertical panels rather than a waist seam, so it follows the body without pulling in at any one point. Hem at the hip, plain cuffs, no hardware beyond the zip.

The colour

A mid tan with red in it — lighter and warmer than a chocolate brown, deeper than a camel. Light leathers like this show their grain much more clearly than black does, which is the reason to look at the surface closely: every variation you can see in the panels is the hide itself rather than a print.

The leather

Full-grain hide with the grain surface left on. Light colours are where that decision shows most — a coated, corrected hide in tan goes flat and uniform and then wears grey at the cuffs, where full grain deepens unevenly and keeps its warmth.

How it is cut

Fitted but not tight, finishing at the hip bone. Sized over a t-shirt or a thin knit. As always it is the shoulder seam that decides the size — it should land exactly where your shoulder ends.

What to wear it with

Cream, white, navy and olive all work. So does black, as long as the black is matte. Blue denim is the natural partner, and the lighter the wash the better the contrast with a tan this warm.

Looking after it

Light leather needs more attention at the points that touch things — cuffs, collar, the edge of the pockets. Wipe those with a dry cloth regularly rather than cleaning the whole jacket occasionally. Condition twice a year with a colourless product; a tinted conditioner on tan can darken patches unevenly.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about tan and light leather

Does a tan leather jacket get dirty easily?

It shows marks sooner than black, mostly at the cuffs, collar and pocket edges where hands and hair reach. What it does not do is get permanently dirty quickly — a dry cloth over those areas once a week keeps a tan jacket looking new far longer than an occasional deep clean does.

Will a brown leather jacket darken over time?

Yes, slightly and unevenly, which is the intended behaviour. Light tans deepen where they are handled most and where oils from skin and conditioner reach — collar, cuffs, the front edge. That gradual deepening is patina, and it is the reason full-grain tan is worth more after a few years than it was new.

Can you dye a leather jacket a different colour?

A professional can take a light leather darker, but not the reverse, and never reliably. Re-dyeing also sits on the surface rather than going through, so it wears at the creases. If you want a dark brown jacket, buy one in dark brown rather than planning to change this one.

How do you get a water stain out of light leather?

Dampen the whole panel evenly with a barely wet cloth rather than attacking the mark, then let it dry flat and away from heat. A water stain is a ring where the hide dried at different rates, so the fix is evening it out, not scrubbing. Condition afterwards. Deep or oily marks are a job for a leather specialist.

What colours go with a tan leather jacket?

Cream, white, navy, olive and grey all sit well against a warm tan. Light blue denim is the easiest pairing of all. The combination to be careful with is a similar mid-brown elsewhere in the outfit — go clearly darker or clearly lighter rather than almost matching.

Should you treat a new leather jacket before wearing it?

A light protector spray is worth it on a pale hide before the first wet autumn, and nothing else. Do not condition a new jacket — it arrives with the right amount of oil in the hide, and adding more before it has been worn can darken it patchily. Wait until the leather starts to feel dry, usually after a season.

For me, the strongest part of this jacket design is the shirt collar. It is simple but distinctive. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
