About Leather Wallets

A wallet is handled more than any other leather thing you own, which makes it the fastest to show whether the leather was real. Six months in, full-grain has darkened where your fingers go and softened at the fold. Coated leather has started to flake at the same points.

Slim or bifold?

Count what you actually carry. Four cards and a folded note fits a slim card holder, sits flat in a front pocket, and is comfortable to sit on. Eight or more cards, receipts and cash need a bifold, which holds its shape better when full. A slim wallet stuffed past its capacity splays at the seams within a year.

Why does a wallet wear out faster than a belt?

Constant flexing at the fold, plus heat and moisture from a pocket. That combination breaks down the fibers far quicker than the steady, one-directional tension a belt gets. It is also why wallet leather should be a little thinner and more supple than belt leather — a stiff wallet cracks along the fold instead of softening.

Should you sit on it?

Try not to, and buy for it if you will. A back pocket puts your body weight on the fold repeatedly and curves the wallet permanently. It is also uncomfortable for your back over years. If it is going in a back pocket regardless, choose a slimmer wallet with fewer layers at the fold.

What about RFID blocking?

It is a real technology and a mostly theoretical problem. Contactless card skimming in the wild is rare and limited by transaction caps. If it reassures you, choose a wallet that has it; do not pay a large premium or accept worse leather to get it.

Questions, answered

How long should a leather wallet last?

Five to ten years in daily use for full-grain, and it looks best somewhere in the middle of that. Coated leather typically starts flaking inside two.

Does it need breaking in?

A week or two. It will feel tight when new — that is the leather holding its shape rather than a fault, and it relaxes to the cards you keep in it.

Will it stretch out of shape?

It molds to what is inside it and stays there. That is why overstuffing a new wallet sets a shape you cannot undo.

Can I condition a wallet?

Sparingly, once or twice a year. Too much conditioner makes wallet leather soft enough to lose its structure, which is not a problem belts have.

Are duties paid?

Yes. Duties and taxes are covered by us worldwide, on orders of any size.
