Description

The slimmest puffer we make: black leather quilted in fine horizontal channels, with a stand collar, a straight centre zip, zip hand pockets, plain cuffs and a drawcord at the hem. No rib, no hood, no visible hardware beyond the zips.

Lightweight by design

This is a three-season jacket rather than a deep-winter one. The channels are narrow and the loft is shallow, which keeps the silhouette close to the body and the weight down — it wears more like a leather jacket than like a winter coat, while being considerably warmer than one.

The leather

Full-grain hide in a light weight with a matte black finish. Weight matters here: a thick hide would flatten the quilting and defeat the point of the jacket, so this is a supple leather chosen to loft rather than to armour.

How it is cut

Close, with room for a knit underneath and not much more. Hem at the belt, drawcord to pull it in. Take your usual jacket size over a jumper and check the shoulder seam.

What to wear it with

A knit, dark trousers, boots or clean trainers. Black and slim means it reads as a jacket rather than as winter kit, which is the whole reason to buy this one over a bulkier puffer.

Looking after it

Condition lightly along the channels twice a year, then buff with a dry cloth. Dry at room temperature if it gets wet. Hang it with space either side so the shallow loft is not crushed flat.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about lightweight puffers

What is the difference between a lightweight and a heavyweight puffer?

Loft depth, not quality. A lightweight has shallow channels and a thin layer of fill, so it sits close to the body and works between roughly 0 and 12 degrees. A heavyweight has deep baffles, much more fill, and handles hard winter at the cost of bulk. Most people in a temperate climate get more use from the lightweight.

Why do some puffers have ribbed cuffs and others plain?

Rib seals the wrist and adds a sporty line; a plain cuff is cleaner and lets the sleeve sit flat under a glove or a watch. Rib is warmer in wind. Plain, as here, is the choice when the jacket is meant to read as outerwear rather than as a bomber.

How tight should a puffer jacket cuff be?

Close enough to stop air moving up the sleeve, loose enough to push up to your elbow and to clear a watch. A plain leather cuff that has to be forced over your hand is too narrow, and no amount of wear will change it — leather gives across the body, not around a finished cuff opening.

What temperature is a lightweight leather puffer good for?

Comfortably from about 12 degrees down to freezing over a knit, and below that with a heavier layer underneath. Above 12 it is too warm zipped. That range covers autumn, spring and most of a mild winter, which is why it gets worn more than a deep-winter coat does.

How do you stop a black leather puffer looking cheap?

Keep it matte and keep it clean. Shine is what makes padded black look synthetic, so avoid silicone-based conditioners and polish, and dust the shoulders with a dry cloth. Beyond that, fit — a puffer that is too big is what reads as cheap more than any finish does.

Should you buy a puffer in your usual jacket size?

Yes, for this one, because it is already cut with a knit in mind. Sizing up to “make room” is the common mistake and produces a jacket that looks borrowed and insulates worse, since the trapped air layer only works when the shell is reasonably close to you.
