An executive leather portfolio in black full-grain cowhide, dyed through the hide rather than surface-coated, so a scuff buffs out instead of showing a pale core. 10 × 13 in, A4 sleeve, zip pocket, four card slots, two pen holders. Free worldwide shipping with duties paid.

Description

Built so the folder is not the thing anyone remembers

A black leather portfolio has one job in a formal room: to be unremarkable. This one is plain-faced with no decorative hardware, folded and stitched at every edge, and flat enough to lie open on a table without being held. The only visible metal is the brass-tone snap stud and the zip pull.

What is inside

  • Snap-flap document pocket, full width
  • Angled slip pocket for immediate access
  • Zip pocket, brass-tone pull
  • Four business card slots
  • Two pen holders on the centre fold
  • A4 notepad sleeve, also fits a clipboard or US letter pad

Carrying it as a leather resume portfolio

If this is going into interviews, load it deliberately. Two copies of anything you expect to be read go in the right-hand document pocket, not the zip pocket — you want to produce them in one motion rather than unzipping while someone watches. Cards in the slots, pen already in a holder. A leather resume portfolio only helps if you are not fighting it in the room.

What a business leather portfolio actually buys you

Something mechanical, not symbolic. Somewhere flat to write, copies that arrive uncreased, and a card you can reach without patting pockets. Walking in with loose paper reads as unprepared; a hard briefcase for a single meeting reads as overdressed. A business leather portfolio is the middle, and that is the whole of its value.

Why dyed through matters on black

Almost all low-grade leather is sold in black, because black hides a sanded split. Scratch this one and the mark is black inside, so it buffs back under a thumb. Scratch a pigment-coated folder and grey or white shows through, permanently. It is the single check worth doing on any leather professional portfolio before you buy it.

Looking after it

A dry cloth, often — black shows dust more than any other colour and most of what looks like wear is surface dust. For marks, a barely damp cloth, dried flat at room temperature away from heat. Condition two or three times a year and no more, because an over-conditioned cover goes soft and stops lying flat, which is the one thing this folder has to do.

Questions

Will the black fade?

It dulls rather than fades. Years of direct sunlight take it toward very dark brown. Keeping it out of a car’s rear window does more than any conditioner.

Does a pad come with it?

No. The sleeve takes any standard A4 or US letter pad, and pads are sold everywhere.

Can I have initials on it?

Blind embossing on request — ask before ordering. Personalised items fall outside the returns window.

Will it fit a laptop?

No. The sleeve is sized for a notepad or clipboard. For a 13 to 15 inch device, see the laptop bags.

How does it close?

A snap tab on the fore-edge with a brass-tone stud. One-handed to open, flat on a table, and it holds the cover shut in a bag without the bulk a zip adds around three edges.

Would brown suit me better?

If your shoes and belt are brown, yes — black leather against brown shoes is the one combination that reads wrong. See brown padfolios.
