Description
The full double-rider shape: wide notch lapels that fold back and button down, a heavy zip running off-centre from hip to collarbone, ribbed quilted panels down the outside of each sleeve, vertical welt pockets at the hip, an angled chest zip and snap-tab cuffs with short zips.
What the lapels do
They are the reason this jacket reads so differently open and closed. Folded back, they frame the chest and give the jacket its width across the top. Pulled across and closed, the under-lapel buttons to the opposite side and the whole front becomes a double thickness of leather with no opening at the throat — which was the original point of it.
The leather
Full-grain hide, black, with a visible natural grain in the panels. It is the strongest layer of the skin, which is why a jacket cut this way lasts: the stress on a biker jacket sits in the front panel and the shoulders, both of which are carrying the grain rather than a sanded and coated split.
How it is cut
Close through the chest, short at the hem, designed to be worn over a t-shirt. A loose double rider stops working — the lapels gape and the asymmetry turns into a mess — so this is one to size by the shoulder and not to buy big.
What to wear it with
Black or dark denim, a plain tee, boots with weight. Nothing patterned underneath, because the jacket already has lapels, a diagonal zip, sleeve quilting and four pockets happening at once.
Looking after it
Condition twice a year, paying attention to the fold line of the lapel, which flexes more than any other part of the jacket. Hang it with the lapels lying flat rather than crushed inward. Keep the zip clean and run it fully rather than forcing it half-open.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the biker jacket shape
What is a Perfecto jacket?
Perfecto is the name Schott gave the asymmetric-zip motorcycle jacket it introduced in 1928, and it stuck as the general term for the shape — off-centre zip, wide folding lapels, cropped hem, belt at the waist. Most “biker jackets” sold anywhere are variations on that one pattern.
What is the difference between a single rider and a double rider?
A double rider is this: the zip sits off-centre and the front crosses over, with lapels that fold back. A single rider zips straight up the middle with a plain or band collar and no overlap. The double is the louder of the two and the harder to wear quietly; the single is closer to an everyday jacket.
What are the snaps and zips on biker jacket cuffs for?
The zip lets a close sleeve pass over your hand; the snap tab then pulls the cuff tight once your arm is through. Together they seal the sleeve at the wrist, which matters a great deal at speed and is still the reason the sleeve can be cut narrow rather than ending in a wide opening.
Should a biker jacket be worn open or zipped?
Both, and they are different garments. Open with the lapels folded back is the familiar look, wider at the chest and more relaxed. Zipped across with the collar closed is narrower, warmer and considerably more severe. Most people wear it open and only close it when the weather makes them.
What body shape suits a biker jacket?
The shape adds width at the shoulder and cuts you off at the waist, so it flatters a narrow or average frame and gives a slim one more presence. If you are broad through the chest already, a plain single rider or a shirt-collar jacket usually sits better, because the lapels stop adding bulk where you do not need it.
Why are biker jackets usually black?
Partly history — black hides were cheap, hid oil and road dirt, and were what Schott used — and partly that the shape is busy enough already. With lapels, an angled zip, sleeve quilting and visible hardware all on one jacket, a strong colour makes it difficult to wear. Black lets the construction read as shape rather than noise.

This jacket has a clean look, and the double-rider cut is a nice touch. It is the detail I would point out first. The overall look is easy to picture with everyday outfits.

I like how the double-rider cut works with the rest of this jacket. The proportions in the design are appealing.
Charlotte Reed –
The shape of this jacket is appealing, especially with the double-rider cut. It has the kind of look I generally prefer. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
Chloe Russell –
The double-rider cut makes this jacket stand out for me. I prefer this sort of straightforward styling. It has a more understated appearance than some similar designs.
Oliver Harris –
The double-rider cut is what drew my attention to this jacket. It gives the design a distinct look without feeling overdone. The listing explains the style clearly.
