Description
A soft matte black jacket with a tall band collar, a straight centre zip, two zip pockets set into a horizontal yoke across the chest, and vertical zip pockets at the hip. Saddle shoulder seams curve over the top of each arm; the back is plain.
The chest yoke
The seam running across the chest is structural, and the two zips sit inside it rather than being cut into the panel below. That keeps both pockets perfectly level with each other and stops either one pulling the leather out of shape when it is used — a neater solution than two separate pockets set at an angle.
The leather
Full-grain hide, soft and completely matte. There is no shine in the finish at all, which on black reads as serious rather than flashy and shows creases as soft folds rather than hard lines.
How it is cut
Close through the body with the hem at the belt. Sized over a t-shirt or a thin knit. The shoulder seam should end where your shoulder ends — the only measurement a tailor cannot fix afterwards.
What to wear it with
Black or indigo denim, a plain knit or tee, boots. The tall collar changes the jacket considerably when zipped to the top, so it has two quite different looks depending on how you wear it.
Looking after it
Condition twice a year and buff off anything that sits on the surface — a matte finish is spoiled by product more easily than a polished one. Hang it so the collar stands rather than folding flat, and keep the zips clean.

Size chart
Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about jacket construction
Why are some hand pockets vertical rather than slanted?
A vertical pocket opens along the natural line of your arm hanging down, so your hand goes in without twisting your wrist, and the opening stays shut when you are not using it. Slanted pockets are easier to reach while seated. On a close-cut jacket a vertical opening also disturbs the panel less.
Does a taller collar make a jacket warmer?
Meaningfully, yes. Most of the heat a jacket loses escapes at the neck opening, so a collar that covers the back of the neck when zipped is doing real work. The trade is that a tall collar standing open looks deliberate rather than casual — it changes how the jacket reads as well as how it performs.
What is a saddle shoulder?
A sleeve cut so the top of it curves over the shoulder and joins the body in a shaped seam rather than a straight one. It follows the shoulder’s actual shape, so the jacket moves with your arm instead of pulling across the back — a detail you feel rather than see.
Band collar or shirt collar on a leather jacket?
A band collar is sportier, closes flat at the throat and keeps the front clean. A shirt collar is softer and more familiar, folds down over a jumper and reads closer to an ordinary coat. If you will mostly wear the jacket zipped, choose the band; if mostly open, the shirt collar frames the chest better.
Are chest pockets on a leather jacket meant to be used?
They work, but lightly. Anything heavy in a chest pocket pulls the panel out of shape over time and the mark does not come out, because leather stretches permanently rather than recovering. Use them for flat things — cards, keys — and keep a phone in the inside pocket.
How do you compare two similar black leather jackets?
Ignore the outside and look at four things: the cut edge of the hide at the cuff or hem, the way the lining is attached, how the zip tape sits against the leather, and the weight of the hardware in your hand. Those four tell you almost everything; the photographs tell you almost nothing.
