Description
A dark brown racer jacket with a waxed, uneven finish — lighter across the shoulders and along the seams, deeper in the panels. Band collar with a snap tab, straight centre zip, quilted panels at the shoulders and elbows, a single zip pocket on the right chest and zip pockets at the hip.
The finish
The brown here is not flat. A wax finish sits into the grain unevenly and burnishes where the jacket flexes and rubs, so the colour shifts across a panel rather than reading as one shade. It deepens with wear instead of fading, which is the opposite of what a sprayed-on colour does.
The leather
Full-grain hide with the grain intact. The quilted panels at shoulder and elbow are a second layer of the same leather, placed where a jacket takes the most abrasion and the most creasing — originally for riding, now mostly for the way they hold the shape of the arm.
How it is cut
Close through the chest with a hem at the belt. Take your usual size over a t-shirt or thin knit; the quilted panels have no stretch, so a heavy jumper underneath wants the next size up. Shoulder seam at the shoulder, as always.
What to wear it with
Dark denim, grey or stone trousers, boots. A waxed brown jacket with this much going on in the surface wants plain colours underneath — white, grey, navy, olive — rather than a pattern competing with it.
Looking after it
Go light with conditioner on a waxed finish and stay off the burnished edges, which is where the contrast lives. If it needs a refresh after a few years, a leather wax rather than a cream keeps the character. Wide hanger, out of direct sun.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather finishes and care
What is waxed leather?
Leather finished with wax worked into the grain rather than a pigment sprayed over it. The wax settles unevenly, so the colour varies across the hide and burnishes lighter wherever the jacket bends or rubs. It is what gives a jacket an aged look from the first day and lets that look keep developing rather than wearing off.
Why do some leather jackets have a single chest pocket?
It comes from racing jackets, where one zip pocket on the chest was all that could be reached while riding and a symmetrical pair would have added bulk across the front. On a modern jacket it is the pocket people actually use, because anything in it stays flat against the body instead of swinging.
What is the difference between cowhide, goatskin and sheepskin?
Cowhide is the thickest and most abrasion-resistant, which is why protective jackets use it; it is also the heaviest and takes longest to break in. Goatskin is lighter with a pebbled grain and is unusually strong for its weight. Sheepskin and lambskin are the softest and lightest, beautiful to wear and the easiest to scuff.
Do leather jackets shrink?
Not in normal wear — they stretch slightly and stay stretched. What can shrink a jacket is heat: drying a wet jacket near a radiator or in a tumble dryer contracts the fibres permanently and hardens the hide at the same time. A jacket that has shrunk cannot be brought back.
How often should you condition a leather jacket?
Twice a year is right for most people in a temperate climate — once before winter, once after. More often than that over-softens the hide and can darken it unevenly. In a dry or very hot climate, three times. The jacket tells you when it is due: the surface starts to feel papery rather than smooth.
Can you wear a leather jacket every day?
Yes, and daily wear is better for it than sitting in a cupboard — leather stays supple from movement and body heat. The one thing worth doing is hanging it properly every evening rather than dropping it over a chair back, because a jacket left creased in the same place for months sets that crease permanently.
