Description
A diamond-quilted jacket in whisky brown leather — the country quilted shape rather than a puffer. Stand collar, a snap-front placket over the zip, a welt pocket at the chest, two more at the hip, a drawcord hem, and a navy quilted lining with a leather-trimmed inside pocket.
Diamond quilting is not puffing
The difference is loft. A puffer has deep channels holding a thick layer of insulation; this has a flat lozenge quilt over a thin wadding, which adds a little warmth and a great deal of structure without bulk. It is why a quilted jacket of this kind sits close to the body and layers under a coat, where a puffer does neither.
The details
Snaps rather than an exposed zip down the front, which is what makes this read as a country jacket instead of sportswear. Welt pockets throughout — nothing patched on, nothing flapping. The navy quilted lining is finished properly, with a bound leather pocket opening inside.
The leather
Full-grain hide in a warm whisky brown that lifts along every quilt line. On a diamond quilt that matters: the stitching crosses the panel in two directions, so the colour catches differently depending on how the light falls, and a flat coated leather would show none of it.
How it is cut
Close, with room for a knit. Hem at the belt, drawcord to take it in. Take your usual jacket size over a jumper. The quilting has no stretch, so do not size down.
What to wear it with
Cords, moleskin or dark denim, a check or plain shirt, boots. It is the most countryside of our jackets and sits better with earth tones than with black.
Looking after it
Condition lightly, working with the diamonds rather than across them. Check the stitch lines occasionally — on a quilt this dense, a broken thread is easier to repair early. Hang on a wide hanger.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about quilted jackets
Is a diamond-quilted jacket the same as a puffer?
No. A puffer has deep baffles holding thick insulation and is built for cold. A diamond quilt is flat, with thin wadding behind it, and is built for structure and a little extra warmth. The quilted jacket is the three-season one; the puffer is the winter one.
Why do quilted jackets fasten with snaps rather than an exposed zip?
It is what separates the country quilted jacket from sportswear. A covered placket with snaps gives a clean front with no metal running down it, and it is easier to open part-way without the jacket gaping. Most have a zip underneath as well, as this one does.
Does a quilted lining add warmth?
A little, and more than a plain one. A quilted lining holds a thin layer of air against you and stops the lining fabric clinging. On a jacket like this the lining is doing a real share of the insulating, since the shell quilting is shallow.
Is a quilted leather jacket practical outdoors?
For dry cold and general country wear, yes — it is tougher than a fabric quilted jacket and considerably more windproof. For rain it is the wrong choice: leather absorbs water where a waxed cotton or technical shell sheds it.
What happens if a quilting stitch breaks?
Very little immediately, because each diamond is bounded by the ones around it. Left alone, the broken line will slowly work open and the wadding behind it can shift. A leather repairer can restitch a short run cheaply, which is why it is worth looking at the quilt lines now and then.
Can you wear a quilted jacket over a blazer?
Over a soft, unstructured one, at a push. Over proper tailoring, no — the jacket is cut too close and ends at the same place as the blazer, so you get two hems and bunched shoulders. Quilted jackets go over knitwear and shirts, or under a longer coat.
