Description

A collarless jacket in warm tan: a plain round neckline finished with a small snap tab, a straight centre zip, two angled zip pockets at the hip and shaped seams running the length of the body. The hem flares very slightly below the waist rather than cutting straight across.

What a collarless neckline changes

Everything above the shoulders. Without a collar or lapel there is nothing framing the face, so the neckline sits flat and the jacket reads much softer than any biker cut. It also layers differently — a scarf, a polo neck or a shirt collar can sit above it without competing, which a lapelled jacket does not allow.

The finish

A washed tan with visible variation across the panels, deeper in the seams and softer across the chest and sleeves. It is a lived-in finish from the first day and it continues to lighten at the points of wear.

The leather

Full-grain hide, soft and light. A collarless jacket depends on the hide being supple — a stiff leather would stand away from the neck, and the whole appeal of this shape is that it lies flat against you.

How it is cut

Fitted. The vertical seams shape it closely through the waist and the hem releases just enough below to sit over the hip rather than gripping it. Sized over a t-shirt or a fine knit. Shoulder seam at the shoulder.

What to wear it with

Jeans, trousers, a dress, a skirt — the lack of a collar makes it the most adaptable shape here. It is the one leather jacket that works over a high-neck jumper without crowding the neck, and the one that works over a dress without fighting the neckline.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year with a colourless product, going lightly on the lighter worn areas so the contrast stays. Keep it off a thin hanger — a soft leather with a collarless neckline shows a hanger dent at the shoulder very quickly.

Size chart

Measure your bust around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about collarless leather jackets

What is a collarless jacket called?

Usually just collarless, or a round-neck jacket. When the neckline is bound and the front is boxy it gets called a Chanel-style jacket after the tweed original. The common feature is that the neckline is finished flat with no collar stand, lapel or band above the shoulder seam.

Who does a collarless leather jacket suit?

It is the kinder shape if you have a shorter neck or broad shoulders, because nothing sits up at the throat or adds width at the top. It is also the easier one if you wear scarves or high necklines. The trade is that it has less presence — a collarless jacket supports an outfit where a biker jacket leads it.

Can you wear a scarf with a collarless jacket?

Better than with any other leather jacket, which is one of the quiet reasons to own one. With no collar or lapel in the way, a scarf sits against the neckline instead of being pushed out by it, and a polo neck shows cleanly above the zip rather than bunching under a collar.

What does it mean when a jacket hem is flared?

The pattern releases below the waist so the hem is wider than the point above it. On a fitted jacket that stops the hem gripping across the hip and leaves a softer line. A fully flared version is a peplum; this is much subtler than that — enough to skim rather than to shape.

Why do women’s jackets zip on the opposite side to men’s?

Convention rather than function. Women’s garments traditionally fasten right over left, men’s left over right, a split usually traced to who historically dressed the wearer. It persists because it persists — and on a leather jacket it is worth noticing only if you have worn a men’s one and the zip suddenly feels wrong-handed.

How do you stop a fitted leather jacket pulling across the chest?

Size by the chest and have the waist taken in, rather than the reverse. Horizontal creases radiating from the zip mean the jacket is too small across the bust, and leather does not give enough to fix it — about half a size, no more. A leather tailor can take in the side seams easily; nobody can add width to a front panel.

The collarless neckline makes this jacket stand out for me. I prefer this sort of straightforward styling. It has a more understated appearance than some similar designs.
