Description
A padded winter jacket built in leather rather than nylon. The body is quilted in wide horizontal channels, the collar stands on its own, and the cuffs and hem are knitted rib — so it seals at the wrists and waist the way a bomber does, instead of letting cold air up the back.
What makes it a puffer
Insulation held in place by stitched channels. On a nylon puffer the channels are obvious because the fabric balloons between them; in leather the panels hold their shape, so the quilting reads as soft ridges rather than tubes. The practical difference from a plain leather jacket is a layer of loft between you and the outside, which is what the warmth actually comes from.
The leather
Full-grain hide, finished smooth and dyed black through. The grain is the dense outer layer of the skin, so it takes a scuff without flaking and keeps its depth of colour. On a quilted panel the sheen shifts slightly along each channel, which is why the jacket photographs lighter at the ridges than in the seams.
Details
Centre zip to the top of the collar. Two slant hand pockets set into the lower panel. Ribbed cuffs and a ribbed hem with a leather facing tab at the front. No belt, no epaulettes, no outer chest pockets — the surface is deliberately clean.
How it is cut
Sized to be worn over a jumper already, so take your usual size rather than sizing up for layers. If you want to put a thick hoodie underneath as well, go one up — the quilting does not stretch the way a plain leather panel does.
Looking after it
Hang it on a broad hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. If it gets wet, let it dry at room temperature away from any radiator; heat is what dries leather out, not water. Condition the outer surface twice a year, lightly, and do not soak the quilted seams.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather puffer jackets
Are leather puffer jackets actually warm?
Warmer than a plain leather jacket of the same length, because of two things working together: the padding traps air, and the leather face stops wind getting to it. A plain unlined leather jacket is windproof but has nothing to insulate with, which is why it feels cold standing still.
Is a leather jacket warm enough for winter?
Not on its own in a hard winter, which is the reason this one is padded. Leather blocks wind exceptionally well and that alone handles autumn. Once the temperature drops below freezing you need loft between you and the hide — either built in, as here, or worn underneath.
Can you wash a leather puffer jacket?
No machine, no soaking. Water sitting in the quilted channels takes days to leave and can mark the leather as it dries. Wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth, let it dry at room temperature, and send anything serious to a leather cleaner rather than a standard dry cleaner.
Do puffer jackets make you look bigger?
Thick ones do. This one is quilted in low, wide channels rather than deep tubes, and it is cut to the body with ribbed cuffs and hem that pull it in at both ends — which is what keeps the silhouette closer to a bomber than to a sleeping bag.
Can a leather jacket get wet in the snow?
Snow is less of a problem than rain, because it brushes off before it soaks in. Shake it off outside rather than letting it melt into the surface, and if the jacket does get damp, dry it slowly away from direct heat and condition it once it is dry.
What is a quilted leather jacket called?
If the quilting holds insulation and the jacket is cut short with rib trims, it is a leather puffer or a padded bomber. If the quilting is flat with no loft behind it — the diamond-stitch country style — that is a quilted jacket but not a puffer, and it is a much lighter garment.
