Description

A mid tobacco brown jacket with a pointed shirt collar, a straight centre zip, one zip pocket on the right chest, two more at the hip and lightly quilted panels across the shoulders. Straight hem at the belt, plain cuffs.

What the quilting adds

Only a narrow band across each shoulder, stitched in long lines rather than diamonds. It stiffens the shoulder slightly so the jacket keeps a defined line there, and it catches light differently from the flat panels — enough to give an otherwise plain brown jacket some structure without turning it into a biker.

The colour

Tobacco: a medium brown with a warm, slightly golden cast where the light hits and a deeper tone in the folds. It sits between the dark browns and the tans, which makes it one of the easier browns to pair — it does not demand anything specific from the rest of what you are wearing.

The leather

Full-grain hide with the grain surface intact. That is the top of the leather scale and the only grade where what you see is the actual skin rather than a sanded and re-printed imitation of it.

How it is cut

Straight through the body, hem at the belt. Sized over a t-shirt or a thin knit; the quilted shoulder panels do not stretch, so size up for a jumper. Shoulder seam at the shoulder, sleeve to the wrist bone.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year with a colourless product. Keep the zips clean and run them fully. Hang on a wide hanger out of direct sunlight — a warm brown loses its golden cast under UV faster than a dark brown does.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about leather itself

What is the difference between full-grain and top-grain leather?

Full grain keeps the outermost surface of the hide exactly as it came off the animal, flaws included. Top grain has had that surface sanded down to remove marks and then been refinished, which makes it more uniform and slightly thinner. Top grain is still real leather and still good; full grain is stronger and is the only one that develops a patina rather than wearing through its finish.

Is vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned leather better for a jacket?

Different jobs. Vegetable tanning uses plant tannins, takes weeks, and produces a firm leather that darkens dramatically with age — excellent for belts and bags, usually too stiff for a jacket. Chrome tanning takes a day and gives a softer, more flexible, more colour-stable hide, which is why nearly all leather clothing uses it.

Does the lining of a leather jacket matter?

More than people expect. The lining carries the strain at the seams, keeps body oils off the back of the hide, and decides whether the jacket slides over a jumper or drags on it. A thin polyester lining stitched in neatly is fine; a lining glued rather than sewn, or missing at the sleeves, is a sign of where the money was saved.

How long does a leather jacket keep its colour?

Years, if it stays out of direct sunlight. Ultraviolet light is what fades dye, and it works on one shoulder and one sleeve at a time, so the damage shows as unevenness rather than overall lightening. Browns and colours go first; black is the most stable. A cupboard rather than a hook by a window is the whole of the protection.

Is leather an ethical material?

It is a question worth asking honestly rather than being sold an answer. Leather for clothing is overwhelmingly a by-product of meat production rather than its purpose, and tanning is an industrial process with a real environmental cost, much of it in the water used. Against that, a hide jacket is worn for decades where a synthetic one is replaced several times. Whether that trade works for you is your decision to make, not ours.

Can a torn leather jacket be repaired?

Usually, and far more often than people assume. A seam that has come apart is straightforward. A tear in a panel can be backed and stitched or patched by a leather repairer, and while the repair will be visible, it holds. What cannot be fixed is leather that has dried and cracked throughout, or a coated finish that has begun flaking across a whole panel.
