Description

A quilted leather puffer in a dark oxblood — brown with red in it, deepening almost to black in the folds. Stand collar, straight centre zip, zip hand pockets, and narrow horizontal channels running through the body, back and sleeves.

The colour

Dark enough to read as a neutral and warm enough not to be severe. On a quilted jacket that matters more than on a flat one: every channel creates a highlight, so a pale colour exaggerates the bulk while a dark one absorbs it. This is the slimmest-looking of the puffers we make, for that reason alone.

The leather

Full-grain hide with a worn finish, lighter along the raised channels where the surface has been rubbed back and deeper in the seams. The red in the colour shows most on the ridges.

How it is cut

The quilting adds bulk, so it wears fuller than a plain leather jacket. Take your usual size over a jumper and check the shoulder seam rather than the chest — the chest will look generous on a puffer and still be correct.

What to wear it with

Grey, charcoal, cream and indigo. Keep what is underneath plain; the quilting is already a texture, and a pattern under it competes. Boots rather than trainers suit the darker colour.

Looking after it

Condition lightly along the channels. Dry at room temperature, never near heat. Hang with room either side rather than packing it into a full wardrobe, where the loft gets crushed flat over a season.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about insulated jackets

How long does an insulated jacket stay warm for?

Synthetic fill loses perhaps a fifth of its loft over five or six winters of regular use, and more if it is compressed or washed often. The shell usually outlasts the fill by a long way, which is the main argument for a leather one — you are not throwing away a good shell because the warmth went.

Can a puffer jacket be repaired or refilled?

A torn channel can be patched and restitched by a leather repairer. Refilling is harder and rarely worth it: opening sealed channels in leather means permanent needle holes and a visible repair. Treat the fill as the part with a lifespan and the shell as the part that lasts.

Is a stand collar warmer than a turndown collar?

Yes. A stand collar closes against the neck when the zip is up, with no fold to let air through and no lapel to blow open. It is the reason almost every insulated jacket uses one, and why the few with turndown collars need a storm tab to compensate.

Why does a dark puffer look slimmer?

Because quilting works by light and shadow. Each channel catches a highlight and casts a line beneath it, and a pale leather makes both much more visible, which reads as volume. A dark colour flattens the contrast between the ridges and the seams, so the same jacket looks noticeably narrower.

Can you wear a puffer jacket somewhere smart?

A dark leather one, worn over a knit rather than a hoodie, passes almost anywhere a coat would — which is much more than can be said for a technical puffer. What rules it out is a bright colour, a visible logo or a hood; none of which this has.

Does a puffer need a hood to be warm?

No, but a hood adds meaningful warmth by closing the gap at the neck and shoulders, where a surprising amount of heat escapes. A hoodless jacket like this one with a scarf does the same job and looks considerably better under a bag strap or a seatbelt.
