Description
A rich cognac brown jacket with a pointed shirt collar, a straight centre zip and two slash hand pockets. The finish is deliberately uneven — deeper in the body panels, lighter along the sleeve ridges and seams — so the colour moves as the jacket does instead of sitting flat.
The colour
Cognac is the warm middle of the brown range: more red than a chocolate, darker and less yellow than a tan. It is the brown that holds its own next to black and navy without looking like an attempt to match them, which is the reason it stays in production when fashionable browns come and go.
The leather
Full-grain hide with the grain left on. In a mid brown the grain is clearly visible, and so is the variation between panels — different parts of the hide take dye at different rates. That variation is what you are paying for; a jacket with none of it has been corrected and coated to hide the skin underneath.
How it is cut
Straight through the body, hem at the belt, sleeves ending at the wrist bone. Take your usual size over a t-shirt or a fine knit, and go up one if a jumper is going underneath. The shoulder seam decides it.
What to wear it with
Navy, grey, cream, olive and white all work. Blue denim is the default and the easiest. Black trousers work better than people expect, provided the black is matte — it is a shiny black against a warm brown that looks like two outfits colliding.
Looking after it
Condition twice a year with a colourless product; tinted conditioners on a two-tone brown even out the contrast you bought it for. Keep it out of prolonged sun, which flattens a warm brown faster than it does black. Wide hanger, no plastic.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about brown leather jackets for men
Can you wear a brown leather jacket with black trousers?
Yes, and it is a better combination than the old rule against mixing brown and black suggests. What makes it work is contrast in texture: matte black denim or wool against a warm brown leather reads deliberate. What does not work is a glossy black trouser or a black that has faded to grey-brown, because then the two colours sit close enough to look like a mistake.
Is there an age at which you should stop wearing a leather jacket?
No, but the style changes what the answer feels like. A plain brown jacket with a collar and one zip is worn by men of every age and always has been. It is the heavily studded, very cropped or very shiny versions that start to look like costume on anyone — at any age, in fact, not only later on.
What shoes go with a brown leather jacket?
Brown boots or shoes in a clearly different shade from the jacket, or black in a matte finish. Trainers in white or off-white are the easy modern answer. What to avoid is boots in almost exactly the jacket’s colour — an inexact match looks accidental where a clear difference looks intentional.
How do you choose between a brown and a tan leather jacket?
By what you already own. A mid or cognac brown is the more formal of the two and sits well with navy, grey and black — a safer first jacket. Tan is lighter and warmer, reads more casual, and goes best with cream, olive and light denim. Tan also shows marks sooner.
Do leather jackets come in tall or long sizes?
Rarely, which is worth knowing if you are tall. Sleeve length is the usual problem, and it is one of the few alterations a leather tailor can do cleanly — though only to shorten, never to lengthen. If your sleeve measurement sits above the largest figure in the chart, tell us before ordering and we will say plainly whether it will work.
What should you check when a leather jacket arrives?
Put it on over what you will actually wear underneath, then check three things: the shoulder seam against your shoulder, that you can cross your arms without it locking, and that the sleeve ends at your wrist bone. Check the zip runs smoothly end to end, and look at the lining stitching. Do that before removing tags, inside the return window.
