Description
A quilted leather gilet in two colours: a light caramel tan across the collar and shoulder yoke, a deep worn brown through the body and back. Stand collar, straight centre zip, horizontal quilted channels, insulated throughout.
The two colours
The split falls on the yoke seam — the horizontal line across the chest and shoulders that most jackets already have for construction reasons. Putting the lighter colour above it broadens the shoulder line and draws the eye upward, which is the opposite of what a single dark colour does. It is a deliberate effect rather than a decorative accident.
The leather
Full-grain hide in both colours, each with its own worn finish — the tan lighter along the ridges, the brown deeper and cloudier. Because the two panels are different dye lots of the same material, they will age together rather than diverging.
How it is cut
Close to the body with the quilting adding its own thickness. Over a tee, your usual size; over a hoodie, one up. Shoulder and armhole decide the fit, not the chest.
What to wear it with
Keep everything else plain and in one colour. The gilet already has two, and a patterned shirt underneath makes three things happening at once. Cream, white, grey or olive, with dark denim or cords.
Looking after it
Condition both colours with the same colourless product, lightly, along the channels. Never use a tinted conditioner — on a two-tone piece it will darken the tan and leave the brown unchanged. Hang rather than fold.

Size chart
Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.
| Size | Your chest | Vest chest | Shoulder |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 36–38 in (92–97 cm) | 42 in (107 cm) | 18 in (46 cm) |
| S | 38–40 in (97–102 cm) | 44 in (112 cm) | 18.5 in (47 cm) |
| M | 40–42 in (102–107 cm) | 46 in (117 cm) | 19 in (48 cm) |
| L | 42–44 in (107–112 cm) | 48 in (122 cm) | 19.5 in (49 cm) |
| XL | 45–48 in (114–122 cm) | 52 in (132 cm) | 21 in (54.5 cm) |
| 2XL | 48–50 in (122–127 cm) | 54 in (137 cm) | 22 in (56 cm) |
| 3XL | 50–52 in (127–132 cm) | 56 in (142 cm) | 23 in (58.5 cm) |
A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.
Questions about two-tone leather
Does a two-tone garment date faster than a plain one?
Usually, yes — anything with a design decision in it is tied to when that decision was fashionable, where a plain brown gilet is not tied to anything. Two earth tones split on a construction seam, as here, is about as durable as colour-blocking gets, but it is still a stronger look than one colour.
Why do jackets put a different colour across the shoulders?
Because the yoke seam is already there. Every jacket has a horizontal seam across the shoulders for shaping, so changing colour at that line costs nothing in construction and reads as intentional rather than as a patch. It also widens the shoulders visually, which most people want.
Will the two colours age at the same rate?
Broadly, if they are the same leather in different dyes — which they are here. The light panel will show marks sooner and the dark panel will show dust sooner, so they look different in different conditions, but neither will fail before the other.
How do you dress around a two-tone piece?
Treat it as the pattern in the outfit and keep everything else solid. One colour underneath, one colour on the legs. The thing that goes wrong is adding a third idea — a check shirt, patterned trousers, or a bright accessory — against a garment already carrying two colours.
Is a two-tone garment harder to repair?
Slightly. A repairer has to match two leathers rather than one, and matching a specific dye lot years later is rarely exact. If a panel needs replacing, the usual solution is to replace the whole colour section rather than patch it, which is more work but looks right.
Should your first leather vest be plain or two-tone?
Plain, almost always. A single dark colour goes with everything and gets worn constantly; a two-tone is the one you buy once you already have that and want something with more character. Nothing wrong with starting here if you like it — just know which of the two you will reach for more.

I was looking at the design details, and the brown shade caught my eye. It works well on this piece. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
