Caramel suede gilet quilted in horizontal channels, with a snap-front placket over the zip, a stand collar, welt hand pockets and a blue quilted lining.

  • Suede — the brushed underside of the hide, softer and warmer to the touch than finished leather.
  • Snaps over the zip so no metal strip runs down a soft-surfaced garment.

Description

A quilted gilet in caramel suede rather than smooth leather. Horizontal channels through the body and back, a stand collar, welt hand pockets, a blue diamond-quilted lining, and a snap-front placket covering the zip.

Suede, not smooth leather

Suede is the napped underside of the hide, brushed to raise a soft pile. It feels warmer to the touch, takes colour more deeply, and catches light in a completely different way — the nap shifts shade as it moves, which is why a suede gilet looks softer and more casual than the same shape in finished leather. It also has no sealed top layer, so it needs protecting from wet rather than wiping clean.

The build

Snaps over the zip at the front, which keeps the line clean and stops a metal strip running down a soft-surfaced garment. The lining is quilted in a contrasting blue and finished properly, which on a lightweight gilet does a real share of the insulating.

How it is cut

Close to the body with the hem at the hip. Size it over whatever you will actually wear underneath. Suede has slightly more give than smooth leather but not enough to rescue a size that is too small.

What to wear it with

A flannel or chambray shirt, a plain knit, cords or dark denim. Caramel suede is warm and informal, so it sits better with earth tones and denim than with black.

Looking after it

Brush the nap with a suede brush in one direction after wear. Spray it with a suede protector before winter. Never condition it with a leather cream — that mats the pile permanently, which is the single most common way a suede garment is ruined.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Size Your chest Vest chest Shoulder
XS 36–38 in (92–97 cm) 42 in (107 cm) 18 in (46 cm)
S 38–40 in (97–102 cm) 44 in (112 cm) 18.5 in (47 cm)
M 40–42 in (102–107 cm) 46 in (117 cm) 19 in (48 cm)
L 42–44 in (107–112 cm) 48 in (122 cm) 19.5 in (49 cm)
XL 45–48 in (114–122 cm) 52 in (132 cm) 21 in (54.5 cm)
2XL 48–50 in (122–127 cm) 54 in (137 cm) 22 in (56 cm)
3XL 50–52 in (127–132 cm) 56 in (142 cm) 23 in (58.5 cm)

A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.

Questions about suede

What is the difference between suede and nubuck?

Which side of the hide was sanded. Suede is the inner split, brushed up into a soft long nap. Nubuck is the outer grain side, sanded very lightly, so it has a short velvety surface and is noticeably tougher. Nubuck looks similar at a glance and wears better; suede is softer and cheaper.

Can suede be quilted?

Yes, and it quilts well — the nap hides the stitch line far better than smooth leather does, so the channels read as soft ridges rather than hard seams. The catch is that any mark around a stitch line is harder to brush out, because the pile is held down by the thread.

Does suede wear out faster than smooth leather?

It shows wear sooner rather than failing sooner. The nap flattens and shines at the points of contact — cuffs, pocket edges, the front where a bag strap sits — long before the hide itself is anywhere near worn through. Brushing and a suede eraser bring most of that back.

Why does suede change colour when you brush it?

Because you are moving the pile. The fibres reflect light differently depending which way they lie, so brushing one way looks darker and the other way lighter. It is not damage and it is not the dye moving — brush the whole panel in one direction and it evens out.

Is suede warmer than smooth leather?

Slightly, to the touch, because the raised pile traps a thin layer of air at the surface. Against that, suede is less windproof than a sealed finish. Over a whole garment the difference is small; the quilting and lining matter far more.

How should you store a suede garment?

Hanging, with space around it, and never compressed — the pile takes a permanent crush mark where something presses against it for months. A breathable cotton cover is fine; plastic is not, because suede needs air more than any other leather finish.
