Description

A warm chestnut brown jacket with a tall stand collar held by two snaps, short tabs across each shoulder, a straight centre zip, two zip chest pockets and vertical hand pockets. The finish has real depth to it — darker in the folds, catching light across the sleeves and shoulders.

The collar

Taller than most, and closed by two snaps rather than one. That second snap is what lets it stand properly: a single tab pulls the collar closed at one point and lets the rest fall open, where two hold the whole band upright. Undone, it folds down softly and the jacket reads completely differently.

The colour

A mid chestnut with red warmth in it. Browns in this range are the most useful ones to own because they sit comfortably with navy, grey, cream and denim without matching any of them — which is what a jacket colour should do.

The leather

Full-grain hide with the grain intact. In a mid brown you can see it clearly, including the variation from panel to panel where different parts of the skin took the dye differently. A perfectly uniform brown jacket has had that sanded off and sprayed over.

How it is cut

Straight through the body, hem at the belt. Take your usual size over a t-shirt or a fine knit. Leather gives about half a size across the chest over a season of wear, and none at all across the shoulders.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year with a colourless product. Close the collar snaps when it is hanging so the stand keeps its shape, and keep the jacket out of long sun — a warm brown loses its red cast under UV before it loses anything else.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about owning a brown leather jacket

Why do some collars have two snaps instead of one?

Because one tab only holds the collar at a single point. On a tall band, the sides fall open either side of a single snap; two spread the tension along the band and keep the whole collar standing. It is a small detail that decides whether the collar-up look works at all.

How do you pick a brown that will still suit you in five years?

Stay in the middle of the range. Very dark browns read almost black and lose the point of choosing brown; very light tans are strongly seasonal and show every mark. A mid chestnut or cognac is the one that goes on working with whatever else you buy.

Can a leather jacket be worn in the rain at all?

Light rain, yes — leather handles a shower perfectly well and always has. What it cannot take is a soaking followed by drying near heat, which is what actually ruins jackets. Get wet, hang it up at room temperature, let it dry slowly, and condition it once it is dry.

Why does my leather jacket feel tight across the back when driving?

Because reaching forward to a steering wheel pulls the shoulder blades apart, and leather does not stretch across the back the way cloth does. If the jacket locks up when you drive, it is too small in the shoulders — the chest measurement will not tell you that, and it is the single most common sizing mistake.

Should a leather jacket be lined in the sleeve?

Yes, and a satin or smooth polyester sleeve lining is worth more than it sounds. Without it the jacket drags on a shirt sleeve every time you put it on and the cuff rides up your forearm all day. An unlined sleeve is a sign of where cost was cut.

Is it worth owning two brown leather jackets?

Only if they are clearly different — one dark and one tan, or one plain and one with a collar that stands. Two mid browns in similar shapes means one of them never gets worn. If you already own a brown jacket, the useful second one is black, or a very different cut.

I like how the stand collar works with the rest of this jacket. The proportions in the design are appealing. I appreciate the focus on the smaller design details.
