Whisky tan leather gilet quilted in sealed squares, with a stand collar, centre zip, zip hand pockets, a drawcord hem and a leather-trimmed inside pocket.

  • Box quilting keeps the fill where it was put, which matters most on a sleeveless garment.
  • Inside welt pocket — set into the lining so the quilting stays whole.

  • 30 days to return anything unworn with tags attached.

Description

A sleeveless gilet in whisky tan, quilted in sealed squares rather than long channels. Stand collar, straight centre zip, zip hand pockets, a drawcord at the hem, and a welt pocket inside the lining trimmed in the same leather as the shell.

The inside pocket

Worth pointing out because many quilted garments do not have one — cutting into an insulated panel interrupts the fill, so it is usually skipped. Here it is set into the lining with a leather-bound opening, which keeps the quilting intact and gives you somewhere secure for a phone or a wallet that is not an outside pocket.

The colour

Whisky: a warm mid tan with amber in it, lighter along each quilted ridge where the finish has been worn back. It is the brightest of the gilets we make and the most obviously hand-finished — the colour moves noticeably from panel to panel.

The leather

Full-grain hide, light in weight. A gilet needs a supple hide more than a jacket does, because the quilting has to loft and a stiff leather flattens it.

How it is cut

Close to the body with the drawcord pulling in the hem. Over a tee, your usual size; over a hoodie or a heavy knit, one up. Judge it by the armhole and shoulder rather than the chest.

What to wear it with

A flannel shirt, a plain knit, or a chambray shirt, with dark denim or cords. The tan is warm enough to carry a check underneath, which the darker gilets are not.

Looking after it

Condition lightly, avoiding the burnished square edges where the contrast lives. Never a tinted product on a light tan. Hang it rather than folding, and keep it out of long direct sun.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Size Your chest Vest chest Shoulder
XS 36–38 in (92–97 cm) 42 in (107 cm) 18 in (46 cm)
S 38–40 in (97–102 cm) 44 in (112 cm) 18.5 in (47 cm)
M 40–42 in (102–107 cm) 46 in (117 cm) 19 in (48 cm)
L 42–44 in (107–112 cm) 48 in (122 cm) 19.5 in (49 cm)
XL 45–48 in (114–122 cm) 52 in (132 cm) 21 in (54.5 cm)
2XL 48–50 in (122–127 cm) 54 in (137 cm) 22 in (56 cm)
3XL 50–52 in (127–132 cm) 56 in (142 cm) 23 in (58.5 cm)

A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.

Questions about quilted gilets

Why do some quilted gilets have no inside pocket?

Because the panel is full of insulation. Cutting a pocket into it means interrupting the quilting and leaving fill with somewhere to escape to, so cheaper construction simply leaves the pocket out. Setting it into the lining instead, as here, costs more work and keeps the quilting whole.

Is box quilting better on a vest than on a jacket?

On a vest the case is stronger, because a sleeveless garment has fewer seams holding the fill in place and more of its surface is one large panel. Sealing that panel into squares is what stops the filling drifting toward the hem over a few seasons.

What does “whisky” mean as a leather colour?

A warm mid tan with an amber or orange cast — the colour of the spirit held up to light. It sits between a pale natural tan and a cognac, and like both it darkens with wear rather than fading. There is no standard for the word; every maker’s whisky is slightly different.

Can you wear a gilet all year?

Three seasons of it, realistically. In spring and autumn it is outerwear on its own; in winter it is a mid-layer under a coat. Summer is where it stops making sense — the insulation that makes it useful the rest of the year is exactly what makes it wrong in heat.

Should you buy a gilet or a light jacket?

A gilet if you run warm, work with your hands, or already own a jacket and want something to layer. A light jacket if this will be the only thing you own for autumn. Arms get cold sooner than people expect — a gilet is a supplement to a wardrobe, not the foundation of one.

Do gilets work on taller builds?

Well, generally, because there is no sleeve length to get wrong — the one measurement that most often defeats tall men buying off the peg. Check the body length rather than the chest: a gilet that finishes above the waistband looks cropped on a long torso.
