Description

The plainest useful black leather jacket: a pointed shirt collar, a straight centre zip, two slash hand pockets and a hem that sits at the hip. No asymmetric zip, no lapels folding back, no studs or belts. It is the shape that goes with everything, which is the whole argument for owning one.

Why plain is the right first jacket

Every piece of hardware on a leather jacket narrows where you can wear it. A studded biker goes with jeans and little else; a jacket with this collar and one zip goes over a shirt, a jumper or a tee, with denim or with trousers, to a bar or to an office that allows a jacket at all. If you are buying one leather jacket, it is this one.

The leather

Full-grain hide, black, smooth finish. The grain is the dense outer layer of the skin, which is why it creases rather than cracks and why it darkens slightly at the elbows and shoulders instead of wearing grey. There is no coating sitting on top to flake off.

How it is cut

Close but not tight, straight through the body, hem at the hip. Take your usual size over a t-shirt or a fine knit; go up one if you want a hooded sweatshirt underneath. Judge the size by the shoulder seam and the back — you should be able to reach forward without the leather pulling across your shoulder blades.

What to wear it with

Jeans and boots, obviously, but it also works over a shirt with chinos or wool trousers, which is where a biker jacket stops working. Brown boots against a black jacket is a deliberate-looking combination; black on black needs a difference in texture to avoid flattening.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year. Hang it on a broad hanger, not a hook, and give it room on both sides. Keep the zip clean — most leather jackets are retired because the zip failed, not because the hide did.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about men’s leather jackets

What is the most popular men’s leather jacket style?

By sales, the plain zip-front jacket with a turndown collar — this shape — outsells the biker and the bomber, because it is the one that fits into an ordinary wardrobe without demanding anything around it. The biker is the more famous silhouette; this is the more worn one.

How should a men’s leather jacket fit across the back?

You should be able to cross your arms in front of you without the leather locking up or pulling the shoulder seams inward. That one movement catches most sizing mistakes, because a jacket can feel fine standing still with your arms down and be unwearable the moment you reach for something.

Do leather jackets have shoulder pads?

Most casual ones have a thin pad or a shaped canvas insert, enough to keep the shoulder line clean without changing your shape. Heavy padding belongs to tailoring, not to leather outerwear — if a leather jacket has a square, built-up shoulder, it is a blazer in leather rather than a jacket.

Can you wear a leather jacket over a shirt and tie?

Over a shirt, easily, and that is one of the reasons to buy a plain-collared jacket. Over a tie it starts to look like two different ideas unless the whole outfit is deliberately dressed-down. Leather does not replace a suit jacket; it replaces the coat you would wear over one.

How do you fix a scratch on a black leather jacket?

Rub it with a clean fingertip first — the warmth and the natural oils close most surface scratches on full-grain leather within a minute. If that does not work, a small amount of colourless conditioner worked in will usually do it. A deep cut that shows pale leather underneath needs a professional; home dye pens leave a visible patch.

What happens when a leather jacket zip breaks?

It gets replaced, and the jacket carries on. A leather tailor can fit a new zip for a fraction of the cost of the jacket, and it is the single most common repair there is. This is worth knowing before you give up on an old jacket — in most cases the hide has decades left in it and only the hardware has failed.
