Description

The fully specified version of the shape: an asymmetric zip, wide lapels with a snap at each tip, snap-fastened epaulettes on the shoulders, a leather waist belt running through loops to a squared silver buckle, angled zip chest pockets and zip cuffs. Everything on it is hardware, and every piece of it was once functional.

Why the belt is there

To stop the jacket riding up. On a bike, a short jacket with an open hem lifts at speed and lets air in across the back; cinching it at the waist fixes that. Off a bike it does something simpler — it defines the waist, which is the reason a belted biker jacket reads sharper than an unbelted one even when the belt is left hanging.

The hardware

Bright silver-tone against black leather, deliberately visible: buckle, epaulette snaps, lapel snaps, zip pulls and cuff zips all in the same finish. It is the loudest jacket of the biker family. If you want one that whispers, a plain single rider or a shirt-collar jacket is the better buy.

The leather

Full-grain hide with its grain surface intact. On a jacket carrying this much metal that matters mechanically as well as cosmetically — every snap and loop is a point of strain, and grain leather holds a fixing where a coated split tears around it.

How it is cut

Close through the chest, cropped at the waist where the belt sits, sleeves to the wrist bone. Sized over a t-shirt. The belt gives you a little adjustment through the waist but none across the chest, so size by the shoulder and chest as usual.

Looking after it

Condition twice a year and keep conditioner off the hardware. Hang it with the belt either fastened loosely or removed, rather than letting the buckle hang against the front panel for months — metal resting on leather leaves a mark.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about biker jacket hardware

What is the belt on a leather biker jacket for?

It closes the gap at the hem. A cropped jacket with a loose bottom edge lifts when you move or ride, and the belt pulls it against the waist so air cannot get underneath. It also sets the waist line visually, which is most of what it does on a jacket that never sees a motorcycle.

Are you supposed to fasten the belt?

Either way is correct and both are commonly worn. Fastened, it emphasises the waist and makes the jacket look more structured. Left hanging or tucked through the loops unfastened, it reads more relaxed — which is how most people wear it. What looks accidental is a belt dangling at different lengths on each side.

What are epaulettes on a jacket?

The short strap across each shoulder, usually held by a snap. They are a military detail by origin, used for holding straps and insignia in place, and they survive on biker jackets purely because they broaden the shoulder line. They serve no function on a modern jacket at all.

Why do biker jackets have so many zips?

Because nothing on a motorcycle can be allowed to flap or fall out. Zip pockets stay shut at speed, zip cuffs seal the sleeve, and the main zip runs diagonally so the front overlaps rather than opening at the chest. Every one of them answered a problem before it became a style.

Is silver or gold hardware better on a black leather jacket?

Silver is the traditional pairing and the less demanding one — it reads as tool steel against black and goes with any other metal you are wearing. Gold or brass warms the jacket up and leans vintage, which suits brown leather more naturally than black. Neither is wrong; silver is simply harder to get wrong.

Will the hardware on a leather jacket rust?

Good hardware is plated or solid brass and does not. What does happen, on any jacket, is that a zip stiffens with grit and dried conditioner in the teeth. Run a graphite pencil along it or brush it out — that fixes nine out of ten “broken” zips without a repair.
