Description

A quilted leather puffer in two colours: a warm tan across the stand collar and the yoke, a deep worn brown through the body, back and sleeves. Centre zip, zip hand pockets, drawcord hem, and fine horizontal channels throughout.

Where the colours split

At the yoke seam across the chest and shoulders — the line every jacket already has for shaping. Putting the lighter colour above it lifts the jacket visually and broadens the shoulder, and because the join is a construction seam rather than an added panel, it reads as design rather than decoration.

The leather

Full-grain hide in both tones, each worn back along the quilted ridges. The tan shows that treatment far more than the brown does, which is why the top half of the jacket looks more textured than the bottom in the photographs.

How it is cut

The quilting adds bulk, so it wears fuller than a plain leather jacket. Take your usual size over a jumper and check the shoulder seam rather than the chest.

What to wear it with

Dark trousers and boots, with one plain colour underneath. The jacket is already carrying two tones; a third in the outfit is where it stops working.

Looking after it

Condition both colours with the same colourless product — a tinted one will darken the tan and leave the brown untouched, which is how a two-tone garment gets ruined. Hang with space either side so the loft is not crushed.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about two-tone jackets

Why is the lighter colour on the top half?

Because light draws the eye upward. A pale yoke widens the shoulders and lifts the whole garment; the same split reversed, with light at the hem, drags the silhouette down and emphasises the waist. It is the same reasoning behind a light shirt with dark trousers.

Is a two-tone jacket harder to pair with trousers?

Slightly. Match the trousers to the darker of the two colours, or go to a neutral that works with both — charcoal, black, indigo. What you cannot do is pick up the lighter colour in the trousers, because then the outfit has a pale top, a dark middle and a pale bottom.

How high should a puffer collar be?

High enough to cover the back of your neck when it is zipped, low enough not to reach your jawline. Too short and the gap at the neck undoes the insulation; too tall and it pushes your chin up and bunches when you turn your head.

Should a puffer’s lining be slippery or soft?

Slippery, almost always. A smooth lining lets the jacket slide over a knit instead of dragging it up your back, which is the single most irritating fault in a winter jacket. Soft brushed linings feel better in the shop and are worse to live with.

Can a puffer jacket be altered?

Barely. Taking in the body means cutting through sealed quilting and letting fill escape, and shortening it means rebuilding the hem and its drawcord. Sleeve length is sometimes possible. Treat a quilted jacket as a buy-the-right-size garment rather than one a tailor can fix.

Is a puffer a sensible first leather purchase?

Only if you specifically need a warm coat. A plain leather jacket gets worn across three seasons and goes with more; a puffer is a winter garment that sits in a cupboard for half the year. Buy the jacket first, the puffer second.
