Description

A black leather jacket with a leather hood lined in off-white jersey, a vertical zip pocket on the right chest, slash hand pockets set into a horizontal waist seam, and a straight hem rather than a rib. Brass-toned zips throughout.

The cream hood lining

A much stronger contrast than the usual grey. Against black leather an off-white lining reads almost like a scarf at the neck, which is why this jacket looks considerably less severe than the rest of the hooded range. It is the detail that decides whether this is the one for you.

The straight hem

No ribbed waistband. The hem is finished flat and sits straight across the hip, which gives a longer, cleaner line than a bomber and lets the jacket hang rather than blouse. It is less windproof at the bottom and noticeably less casual.

The leather

Full-grain hide, black, soft enough that the jacket falls in vertical folds rather than standing away from the body. The hood is cut from the same leather, so it keeps its shape instead of flopping.

How it is cut

Room through the chest for a sweatshirt. Take your usual size over a t-shirt, one up over a hoodie. Check the chest wearing whatever you actually plan to have underneath.

What to wear it with

Black or dark denim and a plain tee — the cream at the neck is already the jacket’s contrast, so nothing else needs to provide one.

Looking after it

Condition the leather twice a year. The pale lining is the part that needs attention: wipe it with a barely damp cloth regularly rather than waiting for it to look grey, because once off-white jersey has gone dull it does not come back.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Jacket chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because the jacket has to close over you. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about hooded leather jackets

Does a pale hood lining get dirty quickly?

Faster than grey or black, yes, and it is the honest drawback of this jacket. Hair product, collar grime and sunscreen all show on off-white jersey within a season if it is never wiped. Dealt with regularly it stays clean for years; ignored, it goes grey and stays that way.

What is the difference between a hooded jacket and a hooded bomber?

The hem. A bomber has a knitted rib waistband that pulls the jacket in and makes it blouse; a hooded jacket like this one has a straight finished hem that hangs. The rib is warmer and sportier; the straight hem is longer-looking and a little more grown-up.

Should a hooded leather jacket have a rib hem or a straight one?

Rib if you want maximum warmth and a casual shape, straight if you want the jacket to look longer and less like sportswear. If you are tall, the straight hem is usually the better proportion; if you are shorter, the rib keeps the body from looking long.

Can you wear the hood up with a bag strap?

Awkwardly. A cross-body strap over a raised hood pins it to one side and pulls the neckline across your throat. The workable version is strap first, hood over the top — or a backpack, where both straps sit symmetrically and the hood rides above them.

Is a hooded leather jacket a sensible gift?

Only if you know the person’s shoulder measurement and that they like hoods. Leather is unusually unforgiving to guess at — the shoulder cannot be altered and the hood is a strong preference either way. A gift card and a conversation is the better plan with any leather jacket.

What goes wrong most often on a cheap hooded leather jacket?

The join where the hood meets the collar. It carries all the strain of the hood being pulled up and pushed down, and on a cheaply made jacket the stitching there loosens within a year and the hood starts to sag backwards. It is the first seam to check on any hooded jacket.

For me, the strongest part of this jacket design is the hood. It is simple but distinctive. The listing explains the style clearly.
