Description

The plainest of our gilets: black quilted leather, a stand collar, a straight centre zip, welt hand pockets and a toggled drawcord at the hem. Narrow horizontal channels through the body and back, with insulation behind them.

Why black is the one most people buy

A gilet is a layer, not a statement, and black is the colour that disappears into whatever else you are wearing. It goes under a coat without clashing, over a shirt without drawing attention, and it hides the quilting better than any other colour — black absorbs the highlight on each ridge that makes a pale gilet look bulky.

The leather

Full-grain hide, finished black. On a plain black garment with no contrast to look at, the hide itself is doing the work — a corrected and coated leather here would simply read as plastic.

How it is cut

Close to the body with the drawcord taking the hem in. Size it over whatever will be underneath: a shirt and this gilet fit very differently from a thick jumper and this gilet. The armhole should sit against you without gaping.

What to wear it with

Anything. That is the point of the colour. Over a shirt, a knit or a hoodie, with jeans, cords or work trousers, under a coat when it is genuinely cold.

Looking after it

Condition lightly along the channels twice a year. Black shows dust and lint at the shoulders more than any other colour, so a dry soft cloth now and then does more for how it looks than any product does. Hang it, do not fold it.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Size Your chest Vest chest Shoulder
XS 36–38 in (92–97 cm) 42 in (107 cm) 18 in (46 cm)
S 38–40 in (97–102 cm) 44 in (112 cm) 18.5 in (47 cm)
M 40–42 in (102–107 cm) 46 in (117 cm) 19 in (48 cm)
L 42–44 in (107–112 cm) 48 in (122 cm) 19.5 in (49 cm)
XL 45–48 in (114–122 cm) 52 in (132 cm) 21 in (54.5 cm)
2XL 48–50 in (122–127 cm) 54 in (137 cm) 22 in (56 cm)
3XL 50–52 in (127–132 cm) 56 in (142 cm) 23 in (58.5 cm)

A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.

Questions about owning a leather gilet

Is black the most useful colour for a gilet?

For most people, yes. A gilet is worn as a middle layer more often than as outerwear, and black is the only colour that never argues with what goes over it. Brown and tan look better on their own; black gets worn more.

Why do some gilets have no inside pocket?

Because every pocket cut into a quilted panel interrupts a channel and lets fill migrate around it. Insulated garments therefore tend to put pockets in the seams rather than the panels, and often skip the inside pocket entirely. It is a construction limit, not a saving.

Can you wear a gilet over a leather jacket?

No, and it is worth saying plainly — two leather garments stacked look like a mistake and move badly against each other. A gilet goes under a coat or over a knit. If you want leather on the outside, wear the jacket and put a wool layer underneath instead.

How do you check the insulation has not shifted?

Hold the gilet up to a light and look along each channel. Even filling glows evenly; migrated filling shows as bright thin patches at the top of a channel and dense dark ones at the bottom. On a well-made garment with narrow channels this takes years to happen at all.

Does a leather gilet need breaking in?

Far less than a jacket. There are no sleeves to mould around your arms and the quilting keeps the panels from stiffening into creases, so it is comfortable from the first wear. The only part that softens noticeably is the collar.

How long does a leather gilet last?

The shell, decades. The insulation, perhaps eight to ten winters before it has lost enough loft to notice. The zip is usually what fails first and is the cheapest part to replace — which means a well-kept gilet is a garment you repair rather than replace.
