Description

An insulated gilet built in leather rather than nylon: tan hide quilted in horizontal channels through the body and back, a stand collar, a centre zip, welt hand pockets and a drawcord with toggles at the hem. Sleeveless, so it adds warmth across the core without touching your range of movement.

Why quilt a vest

A plain leather vest blocks wind but has nothing to insulate with. Stitching channels and filling them puts a layer of trapped air between you and the outside, which is where warmth actually comes from — and doing it in a sleeveless shape means you get it without the bulk of a padded jacket at the arms.

The leather

Full-grain hide in a warm tan, with the colour moving across each channel so the quilting shows as light and shadow rather than flat ridges. The finish is deliberately lived-in and will deepen at the edges and the collar fold.

How it is cut

Closer than an outdoor gilet, which is what keeps it wearable in town. Size it over whatever you will actually wear underneath — a shirt and this vest fit very differently from a thick jumper and this vest. The drawcord takes in a little at the hem.

What to wear it with

Over a shirt or a knit with jeans or cords. It also works as a mid-layer under a larger unlined coat on a genuinely cold day, which is a use a plain leather vest cannot do.

Looking after it

Condition lightly along the channels rather than pressing product into the stitch lines. Do not fold or compress it for long periods — loft that is crushed for months does not fully come back. Hang it on a wide hanger with room either side.

Shipping, duties and returns

Free worldwide shipping, 4–9 working days. Import duties are settled before dispatch where the carrier supports Delivered Duty Paid to the destination country; where it does not, duty is charged locally and we will tell you which applies before you order. Thirty days to return anything unworn with tags attached. Questions to info@cordwainleather.com or +34 614 79 27 86.

Size chart

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Size Your chest Vest chest Shoulder
XS 36–38 in (92–97 cm) 42 in (107 cm) 18 in (46 cm)
S 38–40 in (97–102 cm) 44 in (112 cm) 18.5 in (47 cm)
M 40–42 in (102–107 cm) 46 in (117 cm) 19 in (48 cm)
L 42–44 in (107–112 cm) 48 in (122 cm) 19.5 in (49 cm)
XL 45–48 in (114–122 cm) 52 in (132 cm) 21 in (54.5 cm)
2XL 48–50 in (122–127 cm) 54 in (137 cm) 22 in (56 cm)
3XL 50–52 in (127–132 cm) 56 in (142 cm) 23 in (58.5 cm)

A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.

Questions about quilted gilets

Can you wear a quilted vest under a coat?

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to own one — a gilet under a loose unlined overcoat adds real warmth at the core without the sleeve bulk that stops a second jacket fitting. Size the coat with the gilet on, not the other way round.

Why does a quilted vest have a drawcord at the hem?

To close off the bottom. Warm air rises and escapes out of a loose hem, so pulling the cord in traps it where the insulation is doing its work. It also stops the hem flapping, which is what a loose sleeveless garment does in any wind.

Is a quilted leather vest warmer than a plain one?

Noticeably. A plain leather vest is a windbreak with no insulation behind it; this one has loft stitched in, so it holds warm air as well as blocking cold. The trade is bulk — a plain vest sits flat against you, where a quilted one adds visible thickness.

Can you pack a leather gilet?

You can fold it loosely into a bag for a trip, but not for long. Leather creases permanently under pressure and insulation compressed for weeks loses loft, so a quilted leather gilet is not the packable item a nylon one is. For travel, wear it rather than packing it.

What is inside the quilting, and does it matter?

Synthetic fill, in this one. The practical difference from down is that synthetic keeps insulating when damp and costs less, while down is warmer for its weight and packs smaller. Under a leather shell — which does not breathe much anyway — synthetic is the more sensible choice.

Will the quilting flatten over time?

Slowly, and mostly where it is sat on or crushed. Keeping it hung rather than folded is the whole of the prevention. Shaking it out occasionally redistributes the fill within each channel, which is why the channels are sewn narrow in the first place.
