Description
A plain black leather vest with a stand collar, a straight centre zip, two zip pockets at the chest, two flap pockets at the hip and buckled adjuster tabs at each side of the hem. No studs, no lacing, no panelling — the surface is deliberately clean.
The hem tabs
Small leather straps with buckles at each side of the waist, which draw the hem in. On a sleeveless garment that is more useful than it sounds: a vest with a loose hem lifts and flaps when you move, and pulling it in both fixes that and takes the boxiness out of the silhouette.
The leather
Full-grain hide, smooth black. All the movement in a vest goes through the armhole and shoulder, with no sleeve to absorb any of it, so the grain layer is doing real structural work here rather than only looking right.
How it is cut
Close through the chest with the hem at the waist. Over a tee, take your usual size; over a hoodie or a thick knit, go one up. The armhole, not the chest, is what makes a vest fit or not — it should sit against your underarm without gaping.
What to wear it with
Black is the easier of the two colours we make this in — it goes over a plain tee, a work shirt or a hoodie without any thought, and it does not announce itself. Jeans, work trousers, boots.
Looking after it
Condition twice a year, including the armhole edges, which flex more than anything else on the garment. Wipe the buckles dry rather than letting conditioner collect around them. Wide hanger.

Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about black leather vests
Why do leather vests have buckles at the hem?
To stop the hem lifting. Without sleeves there is nothing holding the garment down, so a vest rides up when you raise your arms and flaps in wind. Drawing the sides in with a tab fixes both and sharpens the shape at the same time. Leave them loose and the vest hangs square; tighten them and it follows the waist.
Does a leather vest need to be lined?
For comfort, yes. Unlined leather sticks to bare arms at the armhole and drags over a shirt sleeve instead of sliding. The lining also takes the strain at the armhole seams, which is the first place an unlined vest fails.
Is a black leather vest a motorcycle club thing?
A plain one is not — it reads as outerwear and nothing more. What carries that meaning is the patches: club colours, a three-piece back patch, and the specific placements that go with them. A vest without insignia is simply a vest, which is what this is and how it is sold.
Can you sew patches onto a leather vest?
Physically yes, and a leather tailor or a cobbler will do it properly with the right needle and thread. Be aware that the stitch holes are permanent, so a patch removed later leaves a visible outline. It is also worth knowing that certain patch designs and placements carry specific meanings within motorcycle clubs, and wearing them without the association is a genuinely bad idea.
How do you clean the underarm area of a leather vest?
Wipe the leather edge with a barely damp cloth and let it air; the lining takes most of the wear and can be spot-cleaned with a little mild soap on a cloth. The real answer is prevention — a vest worn over a shirt rather than bare skin stays clean almost indefinitely.
Can you wear a leather vest on its own?
Over bare skin it is uncomfortable, sticks in warm weather and marks the lining quickly. Over a t-shirt or a shirt it is exactly what it is for. A vest is a layer, not a top, and the one thing it needs is something between it and you.
