Description
A quilted leather gilet in deep chocolate brown, with a stand collar, a centre zip, welt hand pockets set low on the body and a toggled drawcord at the hem. Horizontal channels run through the body and back, with insulation behind them.
The colour
Dark brown behaves very differently from a light tan in the same shape. It reads closer to navy or black in an outfit, it hides the bulk of the quilting better, and it goes under tailoring where a tan one does not. If you want the gilet to be the quiet part of what you are wearing, this is the one.
The leather
Full-grain hide with a lightly worn finish, deeper in the channels and lighter along the quilted ridges. On a dark colour that contrast is subtle — you see it as depth rather than as two tones.
How it is cut
Close to the body, finishing at the hip, with the drawcord pulling the hem in. Size it over whatever will be underneath. The quilting adds its own thickness, so a gilet that fits over a shirt will feel snug over a thick jumper.
What to wear it with
Over a shirt or a fine knit with cords, chinos or dark denim. It is the version of this shape that works in a town rather than only on a walk, and it is dark enough to pass with a jacket over it.
Looking after it
Condition lightly along the channels, not into the stitch lines. Keep it hung rather than folded, and never compressed for months at a time. Dark brown is more forgiving of marks than tan but shows dust on the shoulders.

Size chart
Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.
| Size | Your chest | Vest chest | Shoulder |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 36–38 in (92–97 cm) | 42 in (107 cm) | 18 in (46 cm) |
| S | 38–40 in (97–102 cm) | 44 in (112 cm) | 18.5 in (47 cm) |
| M | 40–42 in (102–107 cm) | 46 in (117 cm) | 19 in (48 cm) |
| L | 42–44 in (107–112 cm) | 48 in (122 cm) | 19.5 in (49 cm) |
| XL | 45–48 in (114–122 cm) | 52 in (132 cm) | 21 in (54.5 cm) |
| 2XL | 48–50 in (122–127 cm) | 54 in (137 cm) | 22 in (56 cm) |
| 3XL | 50–52 in (127–132 cm) | 56 in (142 cm) | 23 in (58.5 cm) |
A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.
Questions about wearing a leather gilet
Does a dark gilet look smarter than a light one?
Yes, measurably so. Dark brown and black read as outerwear; tan and light colours read as outdoor kit. If the gilet will mostly be worn over a shirt in town rather than over a fleece on a walk, the dark version is the one that will get used.
Can you wear a gilet with tailoring?
Under a jacket, yes — a dark gilet over a shirt and under an unstructured blazer or overcoat is a common and sensible layer. Over a suit jacket, no: the sleeves bunch and the gilet hem cuts the tailoring in half. Gilet under, jacket over, in that order.
Why are the hand pockets on a gilet set so low?
Because your hands go in at hip height when your arms are hanging, and because a pocket set higher on a quilted panel pulls the channels out of line when it is used. Low welt pockets also sit below the fullest part of the insulation, so putting your hands in does not make the chest look wider.
Is a leather gilet practical for walking or cycling?
For cold, still conditions, yes — core warmth with free arms is exactly what both need. For anything wet, no: leather absorbs rain, gets heavy and takes days to dry. A technical shell is the better tool when there is weather about; this is for dry cold.
How do you stop a quilted gilet looking bulky?
Buy the correct size rather than one up, use the hem drawcord, and keep what is underneath thin. Bulk on a gilet comes from a loose hem and a thick jumper underneath, not from the insulation itself — a fitted gilet over a shirt has a much narrower silhouette than people expect.
Will leather crack along the quilting lines?
Not on full-grain hide that is conditioned occasionally. Stitch lines are where a coated or corrected leather fails first, because the finish is already under tension there and has nothing flexible beneath it. On real grain leather the stitch line flexes with the panel.
