Description
A tan leather vest built like a utility jacket with the sleeves left off: stand collar with a snap tab, straight centre zip, two zip pockets across the chest, two deep flap patch pockets at the hip and snap adjusters at each side of the hem.
What it is for
The weeks either side of winter, when a jacket is too much and a shirt is not enough. Leather over your core blocks wind where it matters most while leaving your arms free, which is why vests persist among people who work outdoors rather than only as a style.
The pockets
Four outside, and all of them usable rather than decorative. The chest zips hold small things securely; the hip flaps are deep enough for gloves or a phone and close with a snap. On a sleeveless garment the pockets are most of the design, which is why they are large here rather than discreet.
The leather
Full-grain hide in a warm tan with visible depth in the panels. There are no sleeves to take the strain, so all the movement goes through the armhole and shoulder seams — another place where grain leather holds and a coated split tears.
How it is cut
Close. A vest is almost entirely shape, and a loose one hangs like a bag. Size it over whatever you intend to wear underneath — a shirt and a vest fit very differently from a thick knit and a vest — and let the shoulder and armhole decide rather than the chest.
What to wear it with
Over a plain tee or a long-sleeved shirt with jeans or work trousers and boots. Over a hoodie when it turns cold. It does not want anything patterned underneath, because the vest already breaks the outfit into two blocks.
Looking after it
Condition twice a year. Pay attention to the armhole edges, which get more flex than anything else on a vest. Hang on a wide hanger — a sleeveless garment on a narrow one dents at the shoulder quickly.

Size chart
Measure your chest around the fullest part with the tape level. Vest chest is the finished garment measurement and runs larger than your body, because it has to close over you. There is no sleeve measurement on a vest, so chest and shoulder decide the fit. Between two sizes, take the larger.
| Size | Your chest | Vest chest | Shoulder |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 36–38 in (92–97 cm) | 42 in (107 cm) | 18 in (46 cm) |
| S | 38–40 in (97–102 cm) | 44 in (112 cm) | 18.5 in (47 cm) |
| M | 40–42 in (102–107 cm) | 46 in (117 cm) | 19 in (48 cm) |
| L | 42–44 in (107–112 cm) | 48 in (122 cm) | 19.5 in (49 cm) |
| XL | 45–48 in (114–122 cm) | 52 in (132 cm) | 21 in (54.5 cm) |
| 2XL | 48–50 in (122–127 cm) | 54 in (137 cm) | 22 in (56 cm) |
| 3XL | 50–52 in (127–132 cm) | 56 in (142 cm) | 23 in (58.5 cm) |
A vest is worn over a shirt or a knit, so size it over whatever you actually plan to wear underneath. Email your chest and shoulder measurements to info@cordwainleather.com and we will come back with one size.
Questions about leather vests
What is the difference between a vest, a gilet and a waistcoat?
Largely where you are standing. In American English a vest is any sleeveless upper garment; in British English the same thing is a gilet when it is outerwear and a waistcoat when it is the tailored piece worn under a suit jacket. This one is outerwear — a vest or a gilet, not a waistcoat.
Is a leather vest actually warm without sleeves?
Warmer than people expect, because your torso is where most heat is lost and leather blocks wind completely. What it does not do is keep your arms warm, which is exactly the point — it is for the temperature range where a jacket overheats you and a shirt alone does not.
How should a leather vest fit at the armhole?
Close enough that the opening sits against your underarm without gaping, loose enough to move freely over whatever is underneath. A gaping armhole is the single thing that makes a vest look borrowed, and it is caused by sizing up for chest room — take the correct shoulder size instead.
When would you wear a leather vest?
Autumn and spring, and over a jumper in winter. It is also the practical answer for anyone who finds sleeves restrictive at work or on a bike. What it is not is a summer garment — leather over your core in real heat is uncomfortable regardless of the missing sleeves.
Can you wear a leather vest over a hoodie?
Yes, and it is one of the better uses for it — the vest adds windproofing exactly where a hoodie is thinnest. Size for it: a vest that fits over a t-shirt will strain at the armholes over a thick hooded sweatshirt.
Should a leather vest cost less than a jacket?
Usually, and it does — there are no sleeves, so less hide and considerably less labour. But not proportionally less: the body panels, lining, zip and pockets are the same work as on a jacket, so a vest at half a jacket’s price is about right, and one at a quarter is worth looking at closely.
