A briefcase that stands up on its own
Put this on the floor beside a chair and it stays upright. That sounds like a small thing until you have spent a year with a soft bag that slumps over and spills its contents sideways every time you set it down.
This leather flap briefcase brown is built with structured panels and gusseted sections rather than a single soft compartment, so the shape is in the construction rather than in whatever happens to be inside it.

Three sections, not one compartment
Gussets are what separate a briefcase from a bag. Each section expands independently, so a laptop in one does not press against documents in another, and papers come out flat rather than curved around whatever was next to them. A structured leather office bag costs more to make for exactly this reason — every gusset is extra panels and extra stitching.
The turn-lock is slower, and that is the point
A zip is faster. A briefcase with turn lock clasp asks for a deliberate half-turn before it opens, which means it does not come open in a car boot or when the bag tips. The flap also covers the full front, so rain runs off the outside rather than finding the opening.

Where it will wear first
The flap edge and the area around the turn-lock, because that is what your hand touches at every opening. On full-grain that shows as darkening rather than scuffing through. The base studs take the floor contact, which is why they are there.
Looking after it
Keep it off wet floors, empty it when it is not in use so the gussets do not set into a distorted shape, and condition it a few times a year. A structured bag kept permanently overstuffed will lose its lines, which is the one thing that cannot be reversed.

Different bag entirely. That one is a soft black zip-top cut flat to slide under an airline seat. This is a structured brown flap briefcase with gussets that stands upright and keeps its shape. One is for travelling, the other for carrying work between desks.
Will the flap get in the way?
Compared with a zip, yes — it is a two-step opening. What you get for it is a front that covers the whole opening and a closure that will not creep open on its own.
